There is great power in letting go but the first step is having the power within yourself to actually do it. I am speaking of the things that no longer serve us. This could be attachments to food, alcohol, relationships, work, the internet, or just daily habits that get in our way of happiness.

In order to the have the power to let go, we have to admit that there is an unhealthy attachment. It is easy to deny this by saying, “I don’t need that chocolate” and then having to have it every day. OR “My friend’s behavior leaves me feeling empty,” and then continuing to spend time with that person. What I am saying here is that when we talk ourselves out of the truth and rationalize our behavior, we are fooling ourselves.

This keeps us in the same place because we have not faced what is really happening.

The growth comes in admitting that we have an attachment or behavior that is real, is affecting us and is not helpful for our growth. Just facing this is the beginning of the letting go.

There are books and exercises and tools to help us let go of behaviors that don’t serve us.

But in the end the true power is in these words – “It’s time to move on – and doing it!”
