Hi! My name is Dean J. Until my early 20s, I was a shy & socially awkward guy. I had the kind of social ignorance that kept me indoors and alone most days because I just didn't know much what to say to people. It got to the point where I knew I was missing out on so much in life because of my reluctance to "take chances" and reach out to people.
So I went on a decade-long journey to improve this area of my life. I bought and tried several communication & psychology books, joined an improv comedy troupe, worked as a social host on cruise ships for 5 years and completed a college minor in Speech Communication.I also got into sales and marketing.
Finally, I found what worked & what didn't through trial and error and gained the conversational self-esteem I wanted. Now I strive to show others what I learned. To begin, I learned it's about building conversation skills, but also about building your CORE with a life you love. Together, these two areas will bring you to conversational confidence.
One of the secrets I learned about improving conversation skills is that it takes more than just learning what to say and when to say it. Yes, those things are very important; in fact they are an essential part.
I lacked confidence to even try when I didn't have an understanding of social norms and the conversation process. So learning these things is necessary.
However, to truly have effortless conversations, you need to develop yourself at your CORE. That means building a life that you love based on what you value. Not on what will impress others. Also, it means knowing yourself and what you're all about. It means building your self-esteem so you'll have confidence going into conversations and developing positive mindsets that help when you most need them.
Another lesson I learned is that your conversation abilities (and you) don't have to be perfect to work. Great conversationalists make social mistakes all the time. Things don't always go smoothly. That's ok and it shouldn't be something that holds you back.
