My pathway to becoming a psychotherapist started in my 20's with a degree from University of Michigan in political science with a speciality in social psychology. Raised in Detroit I saw first hand how factors from poverty and racism to rigid sexual stereotypes can mark someone. Today society still places pressure on us to conform often to a standard of perfectionism which causes enormous amount of stress on the individual. I moved to Montreal, Canada and then did a BSW at McGill University and later a MSW at Universite de Montreal. In my desire to help my clients I continued training in relaxation techniques and art therapy.
My work experience includes counseling for a CLSC in homecare (Montreal- a CLSC is a community public clinic), then at a shelter for children and women victim of violence and finally as a private therapist. Part of my work included telephone counseling for an EAP- (Employee Assistance Programs). This service was only for employees that had coverage. I found it fascinating to be able to reach out to so many people from all walks of life who otherwise could not have had help. I have now started a telephone counseling service for anyone in North America or through skype in the world.
Telephone counseling service for all North America in English and French. Counseling approaches include cognitive behavorial therapy, relaxation techniques, art therapy (use of scanner or digital camera), and psychotherapy.
I often compare counseling to buying a house. First we look at the house in general, get our first impressions, find out its history then comes the work. We inspect it from bottom to top with an expert. If it has a faulty basement, we fix it up as much as we can and then go on to repair and decorate the other floors. Counseling is similar, each person is in a way a house, each with their own unique story . Our childhood is like the basement. We start there and do what we can do to resolve/repair old issues and then go on to present, looking at the problems but at the same decorating or otherwise discovering our strengths and creativity as an individual
