As the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid moves to legalise medical-cannabis, Cibidoil™ - a startup based in Covent Garden, London - is seeking to capitalise on the UK’s fast-growing demand for hemp-derived products.
Whilst the government have said that the announcement does not pave the way towards legalising marijuana for recreational use, the news highlights the growing demand in the United Kingdom for legal cannabis-derived products.
Cibidoil™ is looking to join a budding industry already supplying the market with products manufactured from marijuana’s close cousin: industrial hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.). Industrial hemp is a variety of cannabis which is naturally low in THC and high in Cannabidiol, commonly known as CBD.
Industrial hemp is legal to grow under licence in the UK and across the EU. It must be grown from selected EU-approved seeds and contain no more than 0.2% THC in dried plant matter.
THC is a psychoactive compound and is responsible for the “high” recreational drug users seek. CBD on the other hand does not cause intoxication and is under research worldwide for it’s effect on the endocannabinoid system and on human health.
