Yes, you read it right! New Breast Cancer treatment wipes out tumours in just 11 days with staggering new therapy by the experts.
Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer that occurs mostly in women, but it may also occur in men.
Breast cancer is a tumor that is developed in mammary glands. Breast cancer can be detected by biopsy, mammograms, breast self examination (BSE) and specialized testing on breast cancer tissue. Treatment of breast cancer may involve radiation, hormone therapy, surgery, targeted therapy and chemotherapy. Breast cancer risk may be lowered by managing controllable risk factors.
Breast Cancer Symptoms:
Breast cancer may or may not cause symptoms. Some women may detect the problem themselves while some others may detect it on screening exams. The most common symptoms of breast cancer are:
Change in the nipple
Unusual discharge from the nipple
The color of the nipple changes
Non-painful masses or lumps
Lumps or swelling under the arms
Change in the size, feel or shape of the breast tissue
Indetention of the breast
Noticeable flattening of the breast
Breast cancer treatment guidelines:
Below are the Breast Cancer Treatment Guidelines that depend upon the stage of breast cancer you’re in, and the doctor then advises the best suitable treatment to cure cancer. Having the money for the treatment is more alarming than the battle for cancer. The cost of cancer treatment in India has grown 3-4 times since 2000. The cost has gone up due to more expensive infrastructure, newer drugs and new technology based investigation. The cost of Breast Cancer Treatment in India costs around 6 lakhs and more.
Surgery:
Breast conserving surgery also known as breast-sparing surgery, lumpectomy, partial mastectomy, quadrantectomy, and segmental mastectomy removes the cancer and the healthy tissues around the breast but does not remove the breast. Some lymph nodes under the arms may be removed for biopsy. If the cancer is near the chest wall, part of it may be removed.
Mastectomy:
Mastectomy is the removal of the entire breast, surrounding tissue and possibly tissues nearby. There are various mastectomy surgeries available depending upon how much tissue is removed.
Double mastectomy is when both breasts are removed.
Radical mastectomy includes the removal of lymph nodes, the entire breast and the pectoral muscles under the breast.
Nipple-sparing mastectomy keeps the breast skin and nipple intact followed by immediate breast reconstruction surgery.
Simple mastectomy includes removal of the entire breast.
Skin-sparing mastectomy includes keeping the skin over the breast intact and breast reconstruction surgery is planned immediately.
Modified radical mastectomy implies removal of the breast along with removal of lymph nodes under the arm.
Radiation Therapy:
High energy beams of radiation are used to kill targeted cancer cells. Radiation therapy can be used after breast cancer surgery or used in addition to chemotherapy for widespread cancer. This treatment does not have any side effects but can cause swelling of the area, tiredness, or a sunburn-like effect. Radiation therapy can be administer in two ways:
External beam radiation:
A beam of radiation is focused on the affected area by an external machine. The treatment is usually given five days a week for five to six weeks.
Brachytherapy:
This involves radioactive seeds or pellets that are implanted into the breast next to the cancer.
Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy drugs are given to kill cancer cells that are present anywhere in the body. It can be administered by a pill, IV infusion, or by a brief IV injection depending upon the drug. Sometimes, chemotherapy is given after the surgery to prevent the cancer from recurring. Chemotherapy has some side effects like infection, nausea, fatigue, and hair loss.
Hormone therapy:
Hormone therapy can slow the growth of hormone receptor-positive tumors by blocking the cancer cells from receiving the hormones. This is usually given after the surgery but it can also be given to the women to reduce the chance of developing breast cancer in high risk women.
Targeted drug therapies:
This is the new treatment of breast cancer. They utilize specific proteins within cancer cells, like the HER-2 protein. Targeted therapies can stop the HER-2 protein from stimulating tumor growth in cancer cells that have this protein. They have fewer side effects compared to other therapies as they only target cancer cells. They are used in combination with chemotherapy.
However, there was a trial conducted by a group of experts where they were astonished to find results. The tumour as good as 3cm was destroyed in just 11 days. This treatment would spare thousands of women from gruelling chemotherapy. The experts team when announcing the results said that they have never seen a breast cancer patient respond so quickly to the cancer treatment. While this trial was conducted, around 87% of participants responded to the treatment with tests showing the cancer had stopped producing more cells.
In 11% participants, the tumor had completely vanished while in 17% the tumor had significantly shrunk. The treatment includes cancer drugs named Tyverb and Herceptin which were given to the patients who were diagnosed with cancer. The team led by Manchester and the Institute of Cancer Research in London, aimed to shrink tumors but when the surgeons tried to remove the lumps which was measured to be 3cm wide, found out that the tumour had already vanished in women. Surgeons were astounded to see the results.
The test was conducted on 257 women from which 66 took the combination treatment. Experts are waiting for further tests before they consider to roll out the treatment more widely. The good thing is, the treatment is just not curing cancer but also building immunity. Herceptin which is given through drip is often used alongside chemotherapy to treat women with this form of cancer. Tyverb - also known as Lapatinib is a pill used for women with advanced levels of breast cancer. This is given when the other treatments fail and the tumor starts spreading to other parts of the body. One drug attacks cancer cells from the outside and the other drug attacks it from the inside. So, experts think this twin attack is a ‘total block’ to stop cancer cells dividing and destroying them completely.
In the test conducted on 257 women, this medicine was given in a combination at the start - right when it was diagnosed. The researchers found that they could eradicate the disease at the very start. This treatment will be followed by a surgery to ensure there are no cancer cells left in the body and doctors hope they don't have to have chemotherapy afterwards.
Further trials would be conducted on the patients to see who responded from a biological point of view. Now, this treatment has a game changing potential. Isn’t it?
