Treatment of Scheuermann’s Disease Through Ayurveda

Abstract

Scheuermann’s disease is condition characterized by hump back or rounded upper back. It is also termed as Scheuermann’s kyphosis. This disorder is one of the most common reasons for back pain in young adults. Pain appears after severe exertion or long duration of inactivity.

Introduction

The normal gradual curves present in our spine help our body to absorb various shocks through daily life routine. Our spine is a delicate structure which maintains a balance of our body and hence any abnormality in it can lead to painful distortion in shape as well as functions of body. Curving abnormally of the spine results in limited mobility and severe pain.

Usually the Scheuermann’s disease affects upper back, i.e. thoracic and lumbar spine. However in rare cases it can affect lower back as well, i.e. lumbar spine, and this type causes more restricted movements and pain as compared to the former one. In this disease there occurs abnormality in the growth rate of the various vertebrae and becomes wedge shaped. This results in appearance of the stack leaning forward forming a curvature. Any serious damage is not seen in this disease however in rare cases curvature can cause harm to spinal cord or other internal organs.

Scheuermann’s kyphosis generally begins before puberty where the exact cause is not known however there is found history of some sort of injury or weakness of the spine before puberty.

Signs and symptoms

Usually the patients contact doctor due to cosmetic reasons of looking abnormal spine not due to pain. Symptoms of Scheuermann’s disease generally appear between the age of 10-15 years, the time when major growth of spine takes place. The common symptoms observed are:

• After prolonged sitting there is pain, tiredness and stiffness of muscles
• The most prominent area of curvature becomes red and inflamed
• Activities like arching, bending, twisting, dancing causes pain
• Cramps or spasms in muscles
• Exercising becomes a difficult task
• On and off back pain
• Movements become restricted due to limited flexibility
• Maintaining balance is a difficult thing
• Hamstring muscles becomes tight and stiff
• Pressure on lungs due to curvature can cause difficulty in breathing

Diagnosis

Physical examination is the common way to diagnose Scheuermann’s disease. Main is observation of the posture and further patient can be advised for X-ray or other imaging tests.

Treatment

Treatment for Scheuermann’s disease mainly depends upon the degree of curve. In less curvature doctor’s in modern medicine recommend these braces while for the severe curvature surgery is advised.
