Spirituality is about attaining a unique awareness. Spiritual growth happens when one gains higher consciousness or awareness of his Self which is beyond the awareness of the five senses and the mind-ego-intellect. For the ones who want to grow in a higher spiritual realm and be spiritually rich, achieving this kind of spiritual awareness is pivotal in life.
However, a question arises: how is eating which is a bodily function related to the concept of being spiritual? Well, it has a big connection; let’s see how?
RELATION OF FOOD WITH SPIRITUAL GROWTH –
Spiritual abundance is not just about discovering our own Self; it extends to realizing the fact that the inner Self which is within me, is present in each and every living being on this Earth! This realization gives rise to love and compassion for every creature, thus making one spiritually rich. And I’m sure you would agree that having non vegetarian food is not a sign of compassion or even humanity towards other living creatures!
On eating meat, one becomes a party to the pain inflicted on that creature and the tremendous suffering it went through on being slaughtered! Just imagine, if a newborn baby is being killed in front of us, would we not feel the pain for such a heinous act? How can anyone then enjoy eating a creature after killing it, and expect to become spiritually rich?
CONSEQUENCES OF EATING MEAT –
Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan, the Enlightened One, says, “You cannot kill that which you cannot produce.” This simple self-explanatory statement in itself contains huge spiritual science!
Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan further goes on to say that Non-vegetarian food and spirituality never go together as they are complete opposite of each other! He explains that when one eats meat, cow, fish or any five sense developed creature, one becomes a part of that poor animal’s murder and hence becomes equally liable for that creature’s death. He will have to pay for it in future lives to come! The act of eating non-veg binds terrible demerit karma, as a consequence of which, one even attracts life in the animal life-form!
While to be spiritually rich, the veils of Self ignorance should be cut down so that one can experience the bliss of the Pure Soul, eating non-vegetarian food rather increases the veils or coverings on the Soul. One charges heavy karmic particles that obstruct the real knowledge and vision of the Soul! It hampers our mind so much so that our mental ability to grasp higher spiritual concepts drastically diminishes, thereby pushing us down the spiritual path!
Ayurveda, a 5000 year old ancient Indian science, also says that whatever food we eat has a direct impact on our mind and intellect. On eating meat, the fear, pain and suffering experienced by that animal passes on to his dead body, and when we consume it, it affects our thoughts and mental state adversely! This is confirmed by researchers too.
SPIRITUAL BENEFITS OF HAVING PURE VEGETARIAN FOOD -
The spiritual benefits to a person eating pure vegetarian food are too many. When one has vegetarian food, he is consuming only one-sensed living beings, which are in a dormant state, and hence they feel minimal pain when they are sliced or cooked. Therefore, this type of diet is appropriate to be spiritually rich! The coverings accumulating on the Soul because of eating a vegetarian diet are also relatively thin, thus helping us to be in better Spiritual awareness.
To conclude, in order to understand spiritual science, build spiritual abundance, and enhance spiritual experience, one must eat a pure vegetarian diet only. A non vegetarian person can never be spiritually rich!

Ambalal M. Patel was a civil contractor by profession. In June 1958, spontaneous Self-Realization occurred within Ambalal M. Patel. From this point on, Ambalal became a Gnani Purush, and the Lord that manifest within him became known as Dada Bhagwan. A Gnani Purush is One who has realized the Self and is able help others do the same. Param Pujya Dada Bhagwan used to go from town to town and country-to-country to give satsang (spiritual discourse) and impart the knowledge of the Self, as well as knowledge of harmonious worldly interactions to everyone who came to meet him. This spiritual science, known as Akram Vignan, is the step-less path to Self-realization.
