In the recent years, numerous methods of using computer networks for data storage have emerged. One of the most popular methods is network attached storage
(NAS). This allows the user to store and retrieve large amount of data effortlessly. This is nothing but a hard disk storage that is being set up with its own network address. This device is attached to the local area network and an IP address is assigned. The main server traces the file request to the NAS file. This device is a server that is dedicated to file sharing and nothing else. This server does not provide any other facilities like file management, email or authentication. Network attached storage consists of components such as hard disk storage, which includes multi disk system and a software. This software configures and maps file locations to the device. These softwares can generally handle an array of network protocols. Configuration can be made using a web browser. This device is often confused with Storage Area Network (SAN). The SAN is a distinct network in itself, to which storage devices are attached. SAN can provide more storage space and performance, but NAS is user friendly and less expensive. The advantages of this system are plenty. It provides the user with better data storage and discovery. It has a simple configuration and hence requires less maintenance. This unit consists of more than one disk drive. The cost of this server has reduced and is affordable to most people. This is now the most chosen device as it is user friendly and versatile.
