Who doesn't love butterflies? With their enchanting graceful beauty, it feels like we're in heaven. They flutter from one flower to another and have been the image of change, happiness and the essence in cultures all through time. The weather can even be predicted by them. Old people in town utter that if the Wooly Bear caterpillar is fuzzier than ordinary, and has black bands on it, the coming winter will be colder than usual.
In our yard, wisteria has grown abundantly and has been the attraction of butterflies every year because of the blossom's sweet scent. To have one light on your shoulder or nearby while pacing through this garden of unadulterated unspoiled bliss is not peculiar.
First named as the Butter-Colored Fly, over the years, its term evolved into the "butterfly". There are 28,000 identified species of butterflies all over the world with many varieties and colors to suit everyone. Their wings are transparent, delicate, and their life spans are anywhere from an hour to a few days, to a few months, up to a year.
The environmental and climate changes are having an impact on butterfly diversity and numbers, causing a severe decrease in population. In some places, the caterpillar stage is coming too soon. Caterpillars are a good source of protein for birds and growing ones, but by the time the latter ready to take on them, caterpillars have already changed into a butterfly, leaving the birds and their hatchlings to fend on something else to supply their dietary needs. In some studies, the extinction of two species of butterflies was hastened by global climate changes. Bearing in mind this information, with reports referring that weather condition alterations have even a deeper affect on the butterfly population, why not built a butterfly garden?
The first thing to do to create a butterfly garden is to find out what species are indigenous to your area and what those particular species like to munch on. Butterflies are picky - they have different preferences for nectar, both in color and taste. To invite a varied assortment of these delightful creatures, plant several food plants that flower all throughout the butterfly's life cycle, both wild and tame. Also, keep in mind the different food needed for the caterpillar stage, and then the adult butterfly stage. Because butterflies are poikilothermic, they love the sun's heat. Putting your garden in an open space and exposed to sunlight will surely liven them since the sun makes them more full of life. You can also put in some stones and rocks for that additional warmth. The butterflies in our garden go for the Bee Balm, Butterfly Weed, Milkweeds, Joe Pye Weed, Phlox, Coneflowers, Queen Anne's Lace, and most of all the Wisteria. Learn to identify the wild plants in your yard, so they won't be destroyed as weeds. They supply butterflies with various nutrients. Butterfly feeders are also offered in addition to their buffet of treats. In your butterfly feeder, since they like over-ripe fruits and decaying plants, you can also put these in. It is also a good idea to have a water source in your garden for them. Butterflies choose to drink on mud or wet sand as to an exposed water source. You can wet a small portion in your garden and put in little sticks where butterflies can perch. Using pesticides in a butterfly garden is very much discouraged.
Butterflies are sure to reciprocate your generosity by enchanting and delighting you during your visits in the garden. Plant the garden, and they will come!
