If you are in the mood for being footloose and fancy free and wish to raise your vibration in the process, then step out to the Templeton Trail at Cathedral Rock for the full moon drumming circle. It truly is a magical event where participants are encouraged to explore the Divine in their own way. People gather for this monthly celebration, bringing their drums, rattles, colorfully lighted hula hoops, chairs, dogs, and of course, their booty to do a little shaking if they so desire.
The gathering spot is about a ¾ mile distance from the lot and while I wouldn’t recommend wearing sandals while hiking, many people were indeed wearing them. Needless to say, the hike is not that difficult. Besides which, once you are there, you can enjoy sitting on one of rock’s plateaus checking out the fabulous Sedona night time skyline—and you thought the rocks were pretty during the day. Wait until you see them under a moon lit evening!
I went for the first time last night and witnessed the monster full moon—meaning the moon was at its closest point to the Earth this year. As dusk approached and the moon began to peer over the Sedona rocks, it almost seemed as though the sun was coming up again. The magnificence of its brightness was astounding. As the moon climbed through the sky, Courthouse, Bell and the other rocks were magnified even in the darkness of night, serving as a metaphor for the Divine Feminine. It is this feminine aspect of darkness where we explore the Universe within, creating the Light of Spiritual Knowledge—and that is certainly a beautiful thing!
For me personally, I have always had a particular fondness for the moon. I remember when I was little thinking how I could see the face of the man on the moon. That face never changed for me—that is, until last night. The familiar man’s face I have known for decades morphed into a kindly elderly woman. I finally understood why Native Americans see the moon as Feminine. It seemed as though Grandmother Moon was shining upon me. Her ancient wisdom was self evident and I was grateful to acknowledge her.
At one point, I was guided to lie down and as I focused on the moon, the shadows being created from its terrain looked differently to me. It now appeared to be a fetus and I instinctively knew it was female. The cycle of life of the Feminine aspect was showing itself to me—from before birth to old age—and in my witnessing, I cherished the feminine gifts of intuition, nurturing and so on that are a natural part of me.
While others got up and danced, I spent most of my time rattling. It was fun to people watch and see everyone expressing themselves. However, I did take some breaks and as I lain on the bedrock it surprised me how I could feel the rhythm of the drum beats all over my back, legs and feet. While I knew one could feel music in a building, it never occurred to me that one could feel it in this manner while outside. Mother Earth, Grandmother Moon and the music being played were all helping me to align with the Divine Feminine within.
So if you are called to participate, gather up your blankets, jackets, water bottle, drums, flashlights and snacks and head out to this monthly celebration of Life.
Please note: Unfortunately, as we were leaving the police ticketed everyone that was not parked in the lot. So, remember that street parking is not allowed. If you do park on the street then I share this bit of wisdom from my friend. After getting her ticket she told me, “it is an opportunity to think of abundance and how it doesn’t really matter that $38 was spent on a ticket.” Hear, hear!
