This flightless bird is raised throughout the world as a livestock commodity. Although the number of Emu farmers in the U.S. has declined, those farms still raising birds have increased their production to meet the ever-growing demand of Emu products. Some worry whether they’ll be able to keep up with demand.

Several Emu oil companies have reported remarkable increases in export sales, especially of pain relief products containing Emu oil. One smaller company alone used approximately seven thousand gallons of Emu oil in the production of Emu oil products in 2002, and expects that usage to double in 2003. This is one agricultural community to pay attention to in the U.S. market and abroad.
