Distillation is the oldest technology. It was originally invented for processing liquor and whiskey. Like the reverse osmosis filtration system, it also de-mineralizes. Reverse osmosis and distillation are the most expensive and least effective against the chemical contamination that we have today.
Of the top rated systems, most remove chlorine, but do nothing to block chlorine by-products. Some of the most harmful contaminants are THMs. They are formed when chlorine is used to disinfect. So, logically, if there is chlorine in the water, there are THMs.
The public water filtration system in this country is a great thing. It protects us from cholera and typhoid, as well as many other borne illnesses. But, it was never designed to handle chemical contamination. Pesticides and herbicides that are illegal in other countries are still used here. The EPA allows certain levels of these poisons to be present in public supply.
