If you’re not satisfied with your business results or with any part of your life then you need to clear the way. It’s important that you tackle this rather than leaving it, ignoring it or suppressing it, because tackling it brings it to your conscious awareness, it allows you to discover what it really is and what it really means to your life. And, it allows you to actively do something – to take responsibility for making the changes necessary to improve your situation.
But what do you do when you feel a sense of overwhelm, like you’ll never get ‘to do’ everything you want to do, like you can’t possibly fit anything else in? Well the first thing is to recognise that quite literally this will be true for you!
You really won’t be able to add anything new until you make space for it – not by stretching your day and doing everything else on your list (because we all know that’s just impossible and a totally unrealistic expectation), but by letting some of the other stuff go, by getting rid of it. It’s like a rubbish or trash bin that’s overflowing, or like your DANCE that’s so packed with all the moves, steps and patterns you’ve ever learned that you physically can’t add more unless you take out some of these moves to create space in your DANCE.
So what do I mean by rubbish, trash or your ‘stuff’?
I mean everything you’ve accumulated over the years that’s no longer useful or relevant; the things confusing your DANCE now. The things to clear away in order to ‘clear the way’.
There’s the physical stuff – like the office, the desk, the mobile phone, or your computer – or for you it might be home rather than business related e.g. clothes, shoes, furniture, or household ‘things.’
And then there’s the mental and emotional stuff – like people making demands of you, bad habits, or people and situations making you feel guilty or inadequate.
Regardless of the type of ‘stuff,’ you need to be ruthless with this in terms of taking action and yet at the same time be easy on yourself so that if feels OK.
So how do you do this? Let’s separate out the Physical, and the Mental and Emotional steps to make this easier.
Physical de-cluttering steps:
1.List all the things you’ve been tolerating and putting up with in your home and/or business environment.
2.Ask yourself whether this is still important to you or whether you can just bin it or let it go. If so do it now!
3.If not, pick the one that makes you feel the worst and plan to tackle that area first. Set a date and time and get to work.
4.Work through the list till the end.
The feeling that you get will be fantastic as its own reward, but the bigger reward is the sense that you’ve freed up some space for something more important to come in or for you to replace it with bigger, better and more relevant things.
Mental and emotional de-cluttering steps:
1.Make a list of the people and situations that drain you.
2.Review how much time you spend with these people, on these activities and in these situations, and what you can do to improve this.
3.Write your improvement plan.
There’s a saying that you’re the average of the five people you’re around most – so doesn’t it make sense where you can to find people who uplift, give you a boost, and make you feel good about yourself? The same is true for situations and activities.
