In our busy and harried lives, it can be difficult to make the time to stop and really ask yourself, “What is important in life?” I’m not talking about the importance of deciding what’s for dinner tonight, or even how you’re going to get this current project done at work. I’m talking a little bigger in scale. The sad truth is, we tend to just focus on what’s right in front of us when we’re rushed. But living your life like this is what leads to feeling like you wasted precious time when things slow down a little (and yes – they will).
Yes, there are the everyday activities that need to get done, but why? Are you worrying about dinner because it’s just another task, or are you looking at it as an opportunity to spend some time with your family? Do you put all your time and energy into that project at work because it’s the next thing on your “to do” list or because your career is important to you and you value knowing you’ve done your best? Beginning to see the difference?
As you focus on what is important in life, being clear on your motives is essential. If you do things just to do them, then life will feel wasted and meaningless. There will ALWAYS be things that need to get done!
But if you look from a bigger perspective and focus on what is important in life, your decisions will be made more intentionally and will add purpose and meaning to even mundane tasks. But this takes a little more time and a little more energy – something most of us like to pride ourselves on not having enough of.
Why do we do that? Yes, life is busy. But I think there’s a great sense of pride in believing we’re busy. We must be somebody important. We have places to go and people to see. But have you even asked yourself if those are important to you, or are you just doing them because it’s what you did yesterday?
So what is this bigger perspective and how do you begin that process? I’m glad you asked! It’s really about taking the time to ask yourself a simple question – WHY? With every activity you do, ask it. “Because I have to” is not allowed to be an answer. No one is holding a gun to your head and making you do these things. You are choosing to. Why? Be clear with yourself. Be honest with yourself.
Now you know your motives! Now you’re free to ask if there is a different way to do things – maybe even NOT do things. This process releases you from old thinking and beliefs and frees you to honestly ask what is important in life.
Your Vibrantly Live Challenge: This isn’t a do it once and you’re done activity! It’s a way of life. You may thousands of choices a day! Yes – THOUSANDS!!! This activity has to do with challenging every decision. But that’s a little overwhelming. So choose a particular area of your life and focus on it and get clear, then move on to another.
For example – maybe look at your morning and every decision you make: For example: what time you get up, every little step of how you get ready (how you style your hair, your entire make-up routine), how you interact with your kids (if you see them), what you eat for breakfast, how you drive to work. See where I’m going? Start small – don’t overdo it!
