Powerful message from a master. It is an interesting dilemma ... how can we set goals and still live in the present. Awareness of our thoughts is an ongoing process.
Yes, we must give up the search...that is key. Seeking much end.
A great video and I love Eckhart's teachings, but the "egoless state" is a poetical way of pointing at what awakening and enlightenment is, but not actually no ego. For if you visit even Eckhart and call out "Eckhart"...he will answer. It is not that the ego is totally gone or destroyed...it is that it no longer fools you. The ego is a mirage. Only when a mirage is taken for really being water does it cause confusion and suffering. Once you realize a mirage is a mirage, it does not totally disappear...it is still perceived, but it no longer fools you.
We were created with an ego for a reason. The ego is not a bad thing, just something that can lead us in bad directions if not trained properly. If you read the Bible, you'll see that Christ had a strong ego, and most would agree that he was an enlightened soul. I agree that the main problem most people have is believing that the things we want to experience must be in the future, when they can happen right now.
Ahh, but we were not created with an ego. What does a baby know of ego? Babies can not distinguish between me and other things...they have what psychologists call the oceanic feeling.
No, we acquire the ego, which is mostly self image, from our parents and growing up. The ego is mostly the accumulated data and knowledge about who we think we are (again self image). So a pointer I use is to ask, who were you at the moment of your birth? It cuts through a lot of the garbage of accumulated knowledge and self image.
Furthermore, my understanding of Christ is he had little ego...not a strong ego at all (and I have read the Bible, a couple times).
