How Special and How Weird Are You?

What if you knew way more than you actually give yourself credit for?

Is being sensitive to what’s going on around you a help or a hindrance? Is it a strength or a weakness?

What if you could finally give yourself permission to be aware of everything you’re already aware of?

Hmmm. (I can hear you now, ‘Karen, what are you talking about?’)

Over a dozen years ago, I started to acknowledge the intuitive thoughts that I had come up when I was coaching people in my corporate job. Someone would be sharing their story with me and wanting my advice. What started to happen is that I would get this thought that would pop into my mind about what to say.

I can tell you that the thoughts that would pop up were out of the realm of what I might normally say.

At first I ignored it. When I did that, I got tremendous migraines.

Then I started to say out loud what was thundering in my head. Virtually every time, it seemed to be the perfect thing to say.

I started to give myself permission to let that happen all the time and it is a part of everything I do in my work with my private clients these days.

Then, I started to notice that this ‘knowing’ that I had was starting to spread to different areas. Virtually always I didn’t pay attention to it and didn’t act on it. I can now see that if I had – my life would be in a very different place now.

Don’t get me wrong, things are absolutely fabulous but had I acted on the cues I was getting – my life would be beyond stupendous!

When I started to really realize that what I ‘knew’ went beyond my work with my clients was not too long after 9/11 happened. That whole summer prior to the twin towers coming down was full of dread for me. I couldn’t explain it. I wasn’t depressed, but I constantly had a feeling of dread.

Who does that? My life was at a very exciting point – Geoff and I had just moved back to Kelowna. We were living in a huge, new executive home. After six years in my beloved Victoria where you had to put a sweater (or two) on at night to sit outside during the summer, we were able to spend all our summer evenings outside and it was warm or even hot!! Geoff was enjoying a really successful business venture and I had just started working for a great company doing really fun things!

But I felt dread. I didn’t get it. But what I did know is that it left me when 9/11 occurred.
Not long after, someone, and I can’t remember who, said that they had talked to many people that had felt the same thing. WOW!! It wasn’t just a coincidence?

Apparently not.

It happened again during the summer of 2008, just before the September collapse of the stock market. The feeling wasn’t as bad, thank goodness, but I knew something was coming.

Every day I realize just how tuned in I am. The difference is now I give myself permission to acknowledge EVERYTHING that I know.

Now I ask, ‘How can I make this work for me?’.

Here’s the thing, I’ve just given a couple of very big and well-known examples because maybe you can identify with them. I’m not writing about this to tell you how special or how weird I am but so you can give yourself permission to understand how special and how weird YOU ARE.

Some of you will think back to those times and completely get how I felt because you felt the same way. Cool! Now give yourself permission to know that you know stuff.

Some of you will think back and know that you didn’t pick up on anything. Also cool!

See, the thing is, we have not been taught how to use our ‘knowing’. We haven’t even been taught that we have a ‘knowing’. In fact, most of us have been ridiculed at many points through our lives when we piped up and said we knew something without having any possible way of knowing. So we squashed it.

What I want you to know is that you know waaaay more than you give yourself credit for. What I’d really like you to do is to start to acknowledge it.

Will you? Here’s how to start.

Start keeping record of it. Write it down in a book or on your phone or tablet in a notes section. Start noticing these kinds of things:

• When you slowed down before a police radar trap
• When you had been feeling really good until you walked into a crowd
• When you had been feeling really good until you were around a person who is obviously in a negative state
• When you actually pick a thought out of someone’s head and say it before they do. You’ll know this because they’ll say ‘I was just going to say that!’ and it wasn’t something you might normally say
• When you know an answer to a question without actually knowing why you would know the answer
• When you know the exact right action to take at your work or business that goes against all regular convention and it works!
• When you know a stock or a business venture or a real estate investment was a great deal (even if you didn’t invest – you still knew it was great)

This is a small list and really you can include everything from the very small and mundane to really big events. It all counts.

Start tracking it because as you come to know how much you really do know then you can start to ask the question ‘How can I make this work for me?’.

How does it get easier to attract than that?
