The lush green meadows and snow-capped mountains are enough for a person to fall in love with nature. And this is what Roopkund has in reserve for us. Well, this is not it. Roopkund trek is not only known for the scenic beauty, but also the mystery left behind from the Paleolithic age. It is a small lake situated at the height of 5029 m in the lap of Trishuli massif. Accompanied by beautiful snow-covered Himalaya, the place is frozen throughout the year.
Every year it attracts thousands of avid trekkers, and there is no possible reason to miss out on this trek. Located in a small district of Garhwal named Chamoli, the lake is also known as 'mystery lake' and 'Skeleton Lake'. The main attraction of the lake lies in the mystery left behind with the human skulls and horse remains left behind. The remains, supposedly, belong to the pilgrim who came to visit the holy lake in 850 A.D. and died due to a terrible hailstorm. Though there is no absolute proof, the locals have different stories to tell. Apart from the picturesque destination and mystery, it is one of the most challenging treks.

How to reach there?
There are multiple ways to reach there, but the easiest and suggested one is to take a train to Kathgodam. From there onwards, you can take a private cab or use public transport to reach Lohajung. The actual trek start from Lohajung onward.
How much time is needed to complete the trek?
Well, the answer depends on your stamina, strength and willpower. Though the standard time required is 8 days. Some people complete it in 10 days while some rare people complete it in 5 days. The beauty of this place increases with the altitude.
What is the best time for the trek?
The climate of this place remains moderate for most months. The summers last for hardly three months i.e. April to June with a temperature that falls below 30°C. Winters are pretty hard as the temperature drops down to freezing points from December to February. The appropriate time for this trek is considered to be July to November with the cool gentle breeze.
