Root Canal is the space in the teeth's root region that holds the pulp chamber where a tooth's connective tissues, nerve cells, blood vessels are present. In general, the incisor teeth have one root canal whereas the molar teeth have 2 root canals.

Deep tooth cavity which reaches the pulp chamber, leakage of dental filling materials, cracks in a tooth are some common things that irritate the tissues inside the root canal region and induce chronic toothache. Such pain in the root canal exists for a few days even after the infected regions are treated with Endodontic treatments.

Apart from adjusting your diet, you have to keep up and maintain some home remedies to soothe that root canal pain. Some effective remedies to get rid of the intense pain have been given in this post.

1) Apply ice pack

Dentists recommend this approach for tooth pain as ice has the power to pacify the infected nerves inside a tooth.

Put some ice cubes in a plastic bag and then wrap it with a light cloth. You can add some water in the plastic bag to increase the cold. Apply the ice pack on the infected tooth over the cheek for a few minutes. You can see the effect if you repeat this process daily for at least 3 – 4 times a day.

Instead of ice, you can try this remedy with a bag of frozen peas. It is also quite effective to alleviate the pain.

2) Cucumber

Cucumber is rich in antioxidants which can reduce toothache. Take a slice of a cucumber and place it on the aching teeth inside your mouth. The antioxidants and hydrating agents calm the root canal pain.

3) Mouth Rinse

Rinsing your mouth with gargling solutions also help you to minimize the root canal tooth pain. Here we have mentioned 2 common, easy but effective fluids to gargle your mouth:

Saltwater solution – Take a teaspoon of salt and mix it with a tumbler of warm water. Stir the mixture well until the salt dissolves in the water. Swish your mouth with this solution for a few minutes and spit it out.

Hydrogen Peroxide – Similar to the saltwater solution, you have to rinse your mouth hydrogen peroxide instead of saltwater. The fluid is quite bitter. You can dilute it by adding some water.

Tea Tree Oil – Take a glass of lukewarm water and add a few drops of tea tree oil to the water. Use the mixture to gargle your mouth. You can get rid of the root canal pain with this solution.

Both saltwater and hydrogen peroxide will help the affected tooth to fight effectively against the bacteria present in the tooth. Likewise, tea tree oil is powerful to fight against oral infections caused by yeast.

4) Pepper Salt paste

Salt mixed with pepper is rich in antibacterial and analgesic properties which are essential for an aching tooth to get rid of the pain.

Grind some pepper and mix it with an equal amount of salt. Add a few drops of water to the mixture to prepare a paste. Apply the paste on the affected tooth. The antioxidants present in it will kill the bacteria and harmful microorganisms in the tooth.

5) Onion

The antibacterial sulphur compounds present in the onion are powerful to extract the disastrous germs and microorganisms in the teeth. Likewise, garlic is also a natural antibiotic which also possesses the components to fight against oral bacteria.

• Cut an onion and place the slice in your mouth. By chewing it, you can suck the juice which feeds the antibacterial compounds to the teeth.

• Take a garlic glove and place it on the aching tooth. Chew it well to kill the bacteria present in the infected tooth.

6) Olive Oil

Olive oil is an efficient home remedy for oral pain and infections. You can utilize it to minimize the root canal pain and also soothe the pain that exists after Root Canal Treatment.

Whelm a cotton ball in the olive oil and massage the infected or root canal filled the tooth with it. You can place the cotton ball near the tooth for a few minutes.

Note: If you do this in the night time, discard the cotton ball from the mouth before going to sleep.

7) Plantain Leaves

Plantain leaves can fight against the germs and other harmful bacteria in the mouth. You can take advantage of this herb to alleviate root canal pain by simply chewing the leaves.

Likewise, you can make a plantain leaf paste by grinding the leaf and mix some water to the powder. Massage the diseased tooth with this paste and leave for a few minutes. This approach also helps you to get relieved from the root canal pain.

8) Potato

Similar to cucumber, take a slice of fresh potato and place it on the infected tooth for a while. By repeating it daily for multiple times a day, you can get relief from the root canal tooth pain and prevent the proliferation of bacteria inside the tooth.

9) Use Tea Bags

Tea leaf juices can numb a tooth for a few minutes. Applying the tea bags over the side of a diseased tooth after dipped in the warm boiled water will lessen the pain.

10) Raw Butter

Dentists recommend dairy products like milk, butter and others for healthy teeth and gums because of the nutrients present in them. They are powerful to alleviate tooth pain and gum diseases. Add a small amount of butter in your diet. It will take care of pacifying the root canal pain.


Besides modifying the diet menu, avoiding hard food items and maintaining the remedies to lessen the root canal pain, the sufferer should maintain an effective dental hygiene routine.

Brushing twice a day, flossing, swishing mouth with mouthwashes will help to eliminate the disease-causing agents from the mouth. Likewise, reducing tobacco and alcohol consumption during that phase will reduce the breeding of oral bacteria and in turn, helps to prevent worsening the root canal pain.
