The holidays are just around the corner! For many people, that means the season of travelling is too. Whether you are going on vacation or travelling somewhere to visit friends and family, it is important to know how to stay safe. To help you do so, your friends at CAA Niagara have come up with a list of 10 tips for safe holiday travel.

Get CAA travel insurance! You never know what could happen when you are away from home. The cost of medical treatment and hospitalization, even if it is within Canada but outside your province, can be extremely high. In case of an emergency, it is very important to have CAA insurance.
If your travel destination is outside of Canada, it is imperative that you get the address of the local Government of Canada office in the country you plan to visit. In case of an emergency, these offices will be able to offer you help.
If you are travelling with young children, ensure that they know their home address and their phone number.
Give a close family member or friend your hotel and contact information. You should also give them a copy of your itinerary. Make sure this person has the phone number of the Canadian embassy in the country you visit as well.
Leave your valuables at home. This includes expensive jewellery and electronics. Leaving these items behind will greatly reduce your chances of items being lost or stolen.
Make two photocopies of your passport, credit cards, and any other ID you have. Give a copy to the person you gave your itinerary to, and bring one copy in your suitcase. If you happen to lose your passport while on vacation, having these photocopies will make getting new identification faster and easier.
If you are travelling by car, make sure you have auto coverage.
If you or your children have any life-threatening allergies, make sure to wear a medical alert bracelet and bring an epi-pen.
Do as much research as you can about your destination before departure. That way, you will know areas to avoid and what areas to include in your itinerary.
If you are travelling by car, remember to take breaks. Driving when you are tired or hungry can be dangerous.
