Written by Dr Gagan Sandhu
Kids are prone to issues emerging from not taking care of dental and oral health as they consume food items like chocolates, candies and other sweets which if stuck to the teeth can create a lot of big problems for them.
Here are 10 tips to oral and dental care for kids.1. Catch them young
One thing you would notice about adults is that most of the habits they have are the ones they have been accustomed to since their childhood.
Habits can be good or bad and children pick up most of their habits from the people around them and by observing their surroundings. It is important that they are taught some good habits about oral hygiene from a young age.
2. Make sure they brush properly
Brushing is the most basic habit for any human being. However, if you do not brush your teeth properly, it will not bear any significant result.
You must keep an eye on your kid when they brush their teeth. The dental care in San Jose recommends that children must brush their teeth at least for a minute and they are moving the brush along their teeth and gums properly. You must also change their brush at regular intervals.
3. Visit a dentist at regular intervals
Normally, it is advisable to visit a dentist once in every six months. Most parents take their child to a dentist when they detect a dental problem in him.
You must have heard the adage that prevention is better than cure. The dental care in San Jose advices that instead of waiting for a problem or ailment to strike your kid, you must take the necessary precautions to protect him from the disease.
4. Flossing is necessary
While most people do not realise this, flossing is as important as brushing your teeth. Flossing helps in plaque, remains of food items and other substances from places in your gums and teeth where brush cannot reach. It is difficult for the bristles of the brush to reach between the teeth and other places like under the gums.
5. Protein-rich breakfast
Make sure that your child does not skip breakfast and have it on time. The dental care in San Jose states that breakfast should be healthy and rich in protein as various reports by leading doctors suggest that a breakfast rich in protein curbs the craving to have something sweet. While indulging in sweets occasionally, having too much of it is bad for the teeth and the health.
6. Keep a check on eating habits
It is not possible to supervise what your child eats all the time. No matter how hard you try, you cannot keep an eye on them twenty-four hours a day. But, you must try to keep a check on their diet and discourage them from eating anything that is unhealthy. If you do not discourage them from an early age, they will pick up the bad habit of eating junk food from an early age.
7. Use a straw
It might seem like a very simple thing but using a straw while consuming soft drink, soda or any other sweetened drink reduces the exposure to sugar considerably. Though this kind of drinks are harmful and must be stayed away from, if your child insists on having it once in a while make sure he drinks it using a straw.
8. Do not let them put their thumb in their mouth
A lot of children have this habit of putting their thumb in their mouth. This is a terrible habit and must be strongly discouraged. This is not as big a problem when the teeth has not started growing but if this habit continues even when the teeth have fully grown, it can lead to misalignment in teeth and even speech issues.
9. Fluoride content
You must check for fluoride content in the water you drink. Some people often pose the question whether fluoride is good for one or not. According to dental care in San Jose fluoride is actually very good for teeth and helps in keeping your gums and enamel and strong protects them from any kind of decay.
10. Right Medication
Children are prone to falling sick if they are exposed the wrong kind of food or even environmental conditions. You have to be very careful when you provide them with medication. The wrong kind of medication, especially consuming medicine which contains a high amount of sugar or sugar content, will be bad for their teeth.
It is important to in calculating the habit of oral hygiene in kids from a young age as these habits will stay with them for a long time and help them retain healthy teeth till their old age.
