Are you a diabetic? Can diabetes be cured, or have you ever wondered so? If you responded positive to both the questions then you are the person I am looking for. There are some really spicy news here for you. Yeah, take a peep. Here are a few simple but leading steps you will need to follow to help you cure diabetes or even prevent it from getting to you.

Step 1: Stay Away From Refined Sugars

A lot of the foods we eat today are comprised of processed sugars. We are not referring to the double number of tea-spoons you put in your cup. Here, we refer to your soda, ice cream, you name it. All these are effective agents of the sugar disease. In such an era where sugar intake is the order of the day, can diabetes be cured? You may be an addict of these sugary foodstuffs and it would not be difficult to understand how hard this message may hit you. But if you need to be out of the line of attack by this disease then you will have to make a healthy choice to reduce these sugars from your diet significantly.

Step 2: Make Exercise Part of Your Daily Routine to Reverse Diabetes

Arguing from my own experience, it feels really good to be physically active. You always have the benefit of energy. And the interesting part of it is, you don't really have to do something strenuous that will rid you of your basal energy. Just set a simple exercise schedule, any that works for you. It could be as simple as taking a walk for a certain distance every day or having some bicycle ride for a couple of moments.

Step 3: Take Large Quantities of Super-foods Preferably on a Daily Basis

You could reduce your risks associated with sugar related problems or actually manage to reverse diabetes by having daily intake of super-foods made of stabilized rice bran, spirulina and super-food powders with high density which may be blended with organic fruit, almond milk, and coconut oil.

Step 4: Get Yourself Enough Sunshine

The act of busking outside in the summer beaches could look interesting. But that is just the entertainment side of it. Have you ever thought of what that perfect-feeling act has on your health? Are you aware it could just be the one thing standing between you and being diabetic? Yes, vitamin D is what you get from busking out there in the sun, and it is an essential way to cure diabetes.

Vitamin D deficiency common among different American populations encourages the disease, along with other related chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune suppression and kidney disease.

Step 5: Reduce Intake of Processed Foods

Processed foods like processed meat, white bread and dairy products are highly responsible for causing diabetes. If you keep them out of your diet completely or take a much reduced amount of them then you can be certain of low risk of diabetes.

While diabetes has managed to become one of the most spoken-about diseases of the 21st century generation, finding a way to cure diabetes has been the focus of numerous recent studies, with a significant majority getting concerned about its form and how it really occurs.

A basic understanding of the disease is crucial for any attempts aimed to cure diabetes or efforts aimed at finding a way to manage it.

What is Diabetes?

It is a condition of unregulated blood sugar caused by either improper behavior of the hormone responsible for this regulation- insulin, or destruction of the pancreatic beta cell that usually secretes hormone insulin when the brain sends a signal for such a response.

When the pancreatic cells are unable to produce enough insulin to encourage the absorption of blood sugar into subsequent tissues for energy production, the resulting condition is a case of excess glucose in the blood. This is type 1 of the disease.

Sometimes the body simply does not use insulin hormone properly, a condition referred to as insulin resistance. This results in diabetes type 2 which involves your pancreas making extra insulin at first to make up for the improper use but becomes unable to keep up over time.

Role of Physical Activity

With over 80 percent of folks living with type 2 of the disease being overweight, there is just so much you can do for yourself to reverse diabetes with physical exercises. In fact, a number of therapists observe that type 2 diabetics can manage the condition simply with an appropriate diet and recommended physical exercises without necessarily having to take additional pills for the hyperglycemic condition.

Physical activity involves the use of the muscles. Your muscles need energy to perform. They use way more glucose than the fats which are just a form in which glucose is converted for inert storage.

When you perform physical exercises you build more muscles which in turn burn and convert the glucose in your body into energy reducing its levels in the blood. Often, when the body does not make sufficient insulin, or is resistant to insulin, your body cells do not use glucose resulting with high amounts of blood glucose. This is where the disease comes in.

Warding off the Sugar Disease

Sometimes you don't have to wait for the disease to set in for you to start looking for ways to cure diabetes. You could alternatively lead a physically active lifestyle and be able to keep the disease away. A physical activity program will help you lose significant amount of weight and maintain a healthy blood glucose level, a method that will significantly reverse diabetes.

You do not have to attain an optimum weight. As soon as you are able to just lose 10 to 15 pounds of weight you will have gone a long way in reducing your risk of suffering from diabetes.

Diabetes and its effects can be managed and cured without involving the use of drugs. You may have been browsing and researching all over the place in search of a way out of diabetes with almost every solution pointing to the use of drugs which at most times are out of reach.

Diabetes can be cured naturally by proper dietary management. There is need to go into the aforementioned way in details so as to help you be on the right track to curing that diabetes using the best natural means ever.

What you eat, and in some cases, what you don't eat is at the heart of any diabetes cure and treatment. Eating right keeps the blood sugar and fats at steady levels, which is the key to keeping diabetes condition under control. Diet Alone approach is the first recommendation for those with pre-diabetic state (those who have high blood sugar level higher than normal but not up to the level to be called diabetic patient). It also serves as a preventive measure, particularly for high risk group like those with family history of diabetes and obesity.

Eat Less Carbohydrates
Diabetic diets consist of less carbohydrate, less fat, more vegetables and fruits and more anti-oxidants. Studies show that choosing the food in this diet should lower your risk not only of diabetes and obesity, but also of heart attack, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, osteoporosis and many other chronic illnesses.

Take Enough Vegetables and Fruits
Eat nine servings of vegetables and fruits everyday. This sounds like overkill. In reality, it could spell extra life for diabetes patient. Studies link diets higher in fruits and vegetables with less diabetes and other diseases.

Eat Beans Five Times a Week
Eat beans at least five times a week. Beans are the highest fiber foods you can find, with the single exception of breakfast cereals made with wheat bran. Diets high in fiber are linked to less diabetes and other chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and even ulcers. Beans are especially high in fiber which lowers cholesterol levels and folate.

Whole Grains
Diets high in whole grains are linked to less diabetes as well as heart disease, stroke and cancer. Have you been eating a high carbohydrate diet with lots of refined grains? Change to whole grains. Whole grains also mean extra fiber, which is the closest thing to a magic bullet for weight loss. Not only does it fill you up quickly with fewer calories, it also alienates some of the calories you eat!

Drink Lots of Water Daily
Drinking at least eight glasses of water everyday is important. Taking a cup of tea daily is also advisable for diabetes patients. Not only does drinking lots of water help you feel full, people who drink plenty of water appear to get less colon and bladder cancer. Every cup of tea you drink provides a strong infusion of antioxidants that help keep blood from clotting too easily (which may thwart heart attacks - important for diabetics)

As diabetics we all imagine a day in the future when a cure for diabetes becomes a reality.

What you may find surprising is that day is not a pipe dream and it is possibly much closer than you may think. The unknown element is what form that "cure" may take.

There is research going on all over the world into dozens of different possibilities, many of which are looking at using the latest technology to effectively cure the condition.

Lets take a look at the ones which are closest to succeeding and the ones which, whilst much further away, hold the most promise:

Closing the Loop

This is a method being developed by most medical device companies that seeks to combine the use of an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM). The CGM reads your blood-glucose levels by various methods (based on the type used) and then communicates wirelessly with the pump to dose according to what your body needs to maintain stable control. This is not a "cure" per say but is the next evolutionary step towards a "closed-loop" artificial pancreas that will operate automatically and mean that the patient is effectively relieved of the responsibility of testing and dosing. It's a curious and appealing idea and is certainly the one that you are most likely to avail of in the near future. Once the issues of battery life, cost and reliability of the CGM are resolved you'll hopefully find that this system becomes commonplace. Eventually it will be coupled with an implantable insulin pump that will complete the closed loop and make your diabetes basically invisible.

Glucose Responsive Insulin

This one is frankly fascinating and is a complete departure from the usual approach to diabetic "cures". A glucose responsive insulin, an idea that is being extensively researched by the JDRF, means an insulin that only acts when it is needed. So for example, you would take a single injection each day which would lay dormant in your body until you ate/exercised etc. It would then sense the presence of rising/falling glucose in the bloodstream and activate or deactivate to maintain normal blood glucose levels. It aims to deliver precise doses of insulin when and where it's needed, device -free and with minimal finger stick testing. It would provide a treatment for type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes where patients are using insulin.

Sounds amazing right? Well of course but there's a number of hurdles to clear first. For a start, a treatment like this has never been created for diabetes or any other condition and is completely uncharted territory for both science and regulation. There is a long way to go in terms of development and even when that yields results, there will need to be a lot of time spent gaining approval from many regulatory authorities. But the overall idea is incredibly bold and exciting. It's certainly one to watch!

Stem cells

Otherwise known as "the holy grail"! If you haven't heard of stem cell therapy then I bid you a warm welcome to the planet earth as you have obviously been living under a rock, on Mars, with your fingers in your ears.

Stem cells are considered to be biological "master" cells that can be coaxed into becoming any tissue that is required. So in theory they can be turned into replacement organs, skin, bone or in case of diabetes- insulin producing islet cells.

The treatment would be administered to effectively replace the damage part of a diabetic pancreas and the patient would simply start to naturally regulate their own blood sugar as though they had never had diabetes. A truly "perfect" cure.

There is huge money and effort being poured into stem cell therapy in the hope that it will yield such a result. However it will take a lot of time and there is no guarantee of success a well as the fact that currently the creation of stem cells requires the destruction of human embryos which causes many ethical issues. However, if these problems can be overcome, stem cells represent the hope of many for a true cure for diabetes. But just like glucose responsive insulins, patience will be a virtue.

The very idea of a "diabetes cure" conjures up many emotions in me. The thought of someone simply giving me an injection and saying "that's it, no more diabetes" seems almost too good to be true. After all this time living with it, diabetes has become a way of life for me. Having spent the majority of my adult life testing 5-6 times a day, counting carbohydrates and adjusting multiple injections accordingly, it would feel very alien and possibly a little unsettling to leave that behind. But I certainly wouldn't say no if and when that "cure" does happen!

In the meantime I would encourage you to keep an eye on tomorrow but don't forget about today. Ignoring the day to day management of diabetes because you think a cure is just around the corner is a hell of a gamble. Make the most of today's treatments and help to make sure that you live healthily and long enough to get your hand on that holy grail!

You've probably heard it said many times: "There is no cure for diabetes". Maybe you've even donated to research for a cure. I've even heard, "If anyone claims to have a cure for diabetes, run the other way!" But this is simply not true. Most cases of diabetes can be fully reversed and put into permanent remission. Is that a cure? Read on and you tell me.

As you know there are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. The only thing that Type 1 and Type 2 have in common is they both cause high blood sugar and the complications that go with that. But the underlying cause is completely different. Obviously if the underlying cause is different, then the cure too will be different because the cure needs to address the cause not the symptoms.

When you are talking about the symptoms of diabetes or the treatment of those symptoms, it makes sense to talk about "diabetes" because those symptoms all arise from the high blood sugar which is common to both types.

But when you are talking about a cure, it makes no sense at all to talk about "the cure for diabetes" because diabetes has actually got 2 completely different causes. It only makes sense to talk about the "cure for Type 1 diabetes" or the "cure for Type 2 diabetes". So for the rest of this post, I will talk about Type 1 or Type 2 and not "diabetes".

Type 1 a.k.a. "Juvenile Diabetes"

The cause of Type 1 is damage or even destruction of the islet cells of your pancreas. Mostly this happens due to an autoimmune reaction of your body so that your own immune system attacks the islet cells. It's not yet known why this autoimmune reaction happens.

The islet cells monitor the levels of sugar in your blood and produce insulin when the sugar levels go to high. This insulin is a hormone that affects other cells of your body - especially those of your muscles, liver and fat. When insulin is present those cells take up the sugar from your blood which in turn lowers your blood sugar back to the normal range. This is the main mechanism your body uses to regulate blood sugar.

When those cells take up the sugar, if they don't need it for energy straight away, they store it away as glycogen in the muscles and liver and as fat in the fat cells.

So without the islet cells producing insulin, the sugar stays in the blood starving the muscles and you get muscle wasting and fat loss. In other words, untreated, a person with Type 1 diabetes gets scrawny and left further untreated they will die. When I was a student twenty years ago, Type 1 diabetes was still commonly called 'juvenile diabetes' as it is almost always diagnosed in children or young adults - not the elderly.

The treatment is to inject the insulin that should have been made by your islet cells. It's a life-saving treatment. It's not a cure, because the person needs insulin injections for life.

So there is not cure for Type 1 although it can be very well regulated with minimal insulin (sometimes even none - see below) if you make the right lifestyle choices. But then, Type 1 only accounts for 5-10% of all cases of diabetes.

Type 2 a.k.a. "Maturity-Onset Diabetes"

While the result of Type 2 is the same - high blood sugar - the cause is completely different. Type 2 results primarily from an excessively high carbohydrate diet over many years combined with a lack of physical activity. The carbohydrates (sugar and starch) become sugar in your blood. To handle that sugar, your islet cells make insulin as I described above and the sugar is removed by your fat, liver and muscle cells.

But when the carbohydrate is too much for a long time, eventually your fat, liver and muscle cells get full and can take no more. They start to ignore the insulin message. As your blood sugar cannot go too high without damage being caused, your islet cells make even more insulin. At first the fat, liver and muscle cells listen to the louder message but if this cycle is repeated it takes progressively more and more insulin to get the same result until eventually the fat cells just won't take any more.

Left over time, this vicious cycle exhausts your islet cells. They can't keep up making huge amounts of insulin for ever, so they burn out and stop producing insulin. This is when Type 2 becomes insulin dependent.

Some of the diabetes drugs work by hyper-stimulating the pancreas to make more insulin. What do you think will happen to your islet cells if they are already tired and then get hyper-stimulated to work even harder? That's right, they accelerate this islet cell burn out.

Type 2 diabetes used to be called "Maturity-Onset Diabetes" because it only affected older adults. But now, kids of 10-13 years of age are even being diagnosed! Why? Too many carbs in the diet - especially soft drinks and grains - and not enough exercise to burn them off.

Type 2 accounts for 90-95% of all cases of diabetes.

The "Cure" for Type 2 Diabetes

In the majority of cases, Type 2 can be fully controlled and reversed by careful control of your diet combined with exercise. You stop putting the excess carbs in and burn off those already there with exercise. It really is that simple.

Over time, given the right support, the cells of your body heal - the fat, muscle and liver cells once again respond normally to insulin and your islet cells become healthy and strong again.

So let's just say you change your diet the right way and do some exercise and reduce your blood glucose (bg) so now your fasting reading is a healthy 85. And this is not so hard to do by the way - you can usually do it in 2-4 weeks. If you change your diet back to what it was when you had high blood sugar, what do you think will happen? Of course your bg will go straight back to where it was. So as long as you maintain the right diet, your bg will stay normal and you won't have any symptoms or long-term complications from diabetes. Pretty good eh?

Now here is my question: does this mean you're cured? So long as you eat the right way and do some exercise, you no longer have diabetes. Sounds like a cure to me. If you go back to eating the wrong way though it will come back; so the cure is dependent on you living the right lifestyle.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a "cure" which allows you to keep living the same unhealthy lifestyle that caused the Type 2 in the first place, I don't think that will ever come. Whether it is a drug, a procedure, a herb, a mystic mountain berry or a nutritional supplement, there is no "cure" for Type 2 without changing your lifestyle. And this is where the myth comes from. Setting aside lifestyle changes, there is no cure for Type 2. There's nothing you can take from a bottle that will get rid of it.

Can your diabetes be cured? Is it possible to normalize your blood sugar and stop all medication?

But Can You Really Cure Type 2?

If you maintain the right lifestyle over months and years to keep you bg normal and generally take the right steps to have optimal health, over time your body's sugar regulating systems get stronger and stronger until you reach the point where you may even be able to eat a high-carb meal again without your bg shooting up through the roof. Would you want to make a habit of it? No. Because if you did, you could expect your Type 2 to come back all over again.

But as time goes by, if you keep living the Optimal Health lifestyle, Type 2 can become a thing of the past.

What about type 1?

I mentioned earlier that some people with Type 1 can live without insulin. Not all people with Type 1 are the same. You understand the main cause of Type 1 is destruction of the islet cells by your own body's immune system. But the severity of this destruction varies from person to person.

In some people the islet cells are completely destroyed. Eating right and doing exercise will certainly help to reduce insulin requirements and so minimize the risk of complications and hypos. But when there are no islet cells in your body at all, while you may reduce your insulin needs, your chance of getting off insulin altogether is slim to not at all.

On the other hand, some people have a less severe case where some of the islet cells are still functioning. They are functioning at a level where they cannot manage the relatively high carbohydrate diets that are the norm today and get diagnosed as Type 1. For these people, following the same right lifestyle as I talked about above for Type 2 will allow them to live just fine without insulin. If this is you, you will probably have to be really careful with what you eat for the rest of your life, but still, it is so much better than injecting with insulin every day or using a pump.

You can see that someone who has a milder case of Type 1 who lives the wrong lifestyle for many years may get diagnosed later in life as their limited pancreas function get progressively eroded away due to the Type 2 vicious cycle I described earlier. I suspect this is the cause of what is now called LADA (Latent autoimmune diabetes of adults) or Type 1.5 diabetes.

What Is This 'Right Lifestyle' To Minimize Type 1 Or Reverse Type 2?

Type 2 can be typically be reversed in 2-4 weeks. If the Type 2 vicious cycle has been at work for some time, it may take longer for your islet cells to recover.

Here is the overview of how to do it:

1. Get a blood glucose monitor (if you don't have one already) and measure your fasting blood glucose. If you measure it everyday, you can see what is helping and what is not.

2. Cut back on the carbs. You'll need to be really strict with this for the first 2-4 weeks until you get you blood sugar back to normal. It's also important you don't eat too much protein.

3. Do regular exercise. Any exercise is good, but I have designed a program just for you to make it easy.

4. Take nutritional supplements. This will help your body manage blood sugar but also help with the long-term healing you need to do.

And yes, that is basically it.
