A kitchen should be a functional and organized space where you can easily prepare meals and enjoy warm conversations with friends and family. In a small kitchen, however, doing any of these tasks can be quite challenging. Fortunately, with a few simple tricks, you can expand the functionality of even the smallest kitchen, returning it to its proper place as “the heart of the home.” Space in Surprising Places If you have a large kitchen, you can afford to waste some space and still find room for everything. However, in a small kitchen, no square inch can go unused. That’s why unique storage solutions are essential for making the most of your small kitchen. For example, most of the shelves in your cabinets are likely only half-used, as the space above a certain item has to remain empty to ensure you can easily access your kitchen accessories. However, if you install hanging shelves in your cabinets, you can use one half of the shelf for one item, and the other half for another, allowing you to double your storage space. Use High-End Materials Another way to make the most of your small kitchen is to use high-end materials to finish the space. Whether it’s natural stone of some sort for your countertop or its premium quiet-close drawers and cabinet doors, your kitchen deserves to be built with quality materials. In addition to being long-lasting, these materials are often lighter and brighter, helping to open up the space. What’s more, they often provide improved functionality over standard-grade materials, allowing you to improve the utility and the aesthetics of your kitchen at the same time. Island Paradise If you still find that you’re short on space, an island cart can make a great addition to your cramped kitchen. These carts feature heavy-duty casters that make it easy to move them wherever they’re needed, even when you have heavy appliances stored in the on-board cabinets. Best of all, the area on top features ample countertop space, which will quickly increase the area you have available for food preparation. If you don’t have enough room in your kitchen to store a cart like this, you can find space for it in your living room or dining room and use the countertop space for other functions when it’s not being used for its intended purpose. Keep it Clean The most important rule to remember when it comes to a small kitchen is to keep it clean as best you can. Any clutter that enters your kitchen will quickly reduce available space and will degrade the aesthetics of the space, especially when compared to a larger kitchen. By keeping clutter out, then, you can maintain a beautiful and functional kitchen that will serve you well for years to come.
