You are always concerned with your family's oral health and wish to keep trips to the dentist to a bare minimum. No matter what the family members' ages, there are ways and means to motivate them to systematically care for their teeth. Follow these suggestions for shiny, clean teeth for the entire household:

Develop a Routine

Just as soon as the children are old enough to brush their teeth by themselves, start them on a daily brushing routine. Have set times when brushing is mandatory, such as first thing in the morning, after meals, and right before bedtime. Always keep the brushes and toothpaste in the same places, so they don't have to search for what they need. Once they catch on to these expectations, they will probably hold on to these routines for the rest of their lives.

Make it Fun

Use a funny jingle or counting game to extend the time of your children's brushing. This will prevent them from just taking a few swipes with the brush and missing major areas. Do it with them for the first few times until they get the rhythm of things, and then allow them to do it on their own. Buy a timer for older children so they too can make sure they do a thorough job of cleaning their teeth. Purchase all brushes in bright, favorite colors and replace them often. Assign a color to each child so they don't get mixed up. Always keep extra brushes readily available for travel and guests.

Purchase Unique Accessories

Make your child's morning by purchasing cartoon character toothbrushes and specialty flavored toothpastes that meet dental guidelines. There are even children's brushes that play music while teeth are being cleaned. Vibrating, electric, or jet stream brushes for teens and adults are always a hit; just be sure to always have a supply of batteries or nearby outlets available.

Making your kids' oral hygiene does not have to be a huge challenge. Your family may need extra assistance and reminders, but they definitely want clean, healthy teeth and gums. Enlist the aid of these suggestions and they will stay on course with brushing and flossing for a lifetime. Be sure to also stress the use of mouthwash and dental floss for even cleaner teeth and gums. Trips to the dentist and Periodontal Specialists will become less frequent and their smiles will shine through every single day.
