Many people enjoy starting the day with one or more cups of hot coffee or tea. While many of these hot beverages have a great flavor on their own, they can be enhanced by adding some spices, syrups or other flavorings. When you are in the mood for something new but you do not feel like dealing with the lines at the coffee shop, try one of these options.

Coconut Milk

If you usually put creamer or half and half into your coffee, try coconut milk instead. Coconut milk contains less sugar than creamer. It is available in sweetened or unsweetened varieties. Some coconut milks have some vanilla flavoring added in. Coconut blends are also available, such as a coconut and cashew milk blend. This product is vegan-friendly, dairy-free, soy-free and gluten-free. It is available in shelf-stable containers or in the refrigerated cases at most grocery stores.

Use Flavored Syrups

Get an authentic coffee shop experience when you use flavored syrups for coffee and tea. A basic flavored syrup such as chocolate pairs well with a bold-roasted coffee. Some companies, like Monin, know that a hazelnut flavored syrup adds sophistication to your drink. For tea, try a syrup with raspberry, strawberry or citrus for a fresh flavor. With a fruity syrup, you could have iced tea or coffee.

Vanilla Extract

Vanilla extract is a simple yet classic flavoring. It pairs well with any type of tea, including herbal or green tea. If you prefer coffee as your beverage of choice, vanilla extract works well in a plain regular or decaffeinated cup of java. If you like flavored coffee, adding a few drops of authentic vanilla extract will make it taste a little sweeter.

Spices

Spices are another simple way to add flavor to your favorite coffee drink. A dash of cinnamon is a delightful way to spice up your coffee early in the morning. You could try it alone or with a pinch of nutmeg and ginger. Consider some Dutch-processed cocoa in your coffee. This would add a rich, chocolaty effect. If you are having hot tea, try spices such as anise, ginger or cardamom to add to it.

These four ways of dressing up your hot or iced coffee or tea add a little spice to your life. Being able to make fancy coffee and tea drinks at home could also save you a considerable amount of money. You will also save time by making your drinks at home instead of going out.
