Written by Clifford Blodgett
There are a few things that can impact your earning potential and career advancement in the workplace. Furthering your education by getting a degree is a great way find a new career or advance the one that you already have. Information is constantly changing in every field. Staying current on your skill set will help to enhance your value to employers. Technology today allows working professionals to continue to work and go to school by offering online classes. Work at your own pace, and from the comfort of your home to get the credentials and training you need for advancement.
1) Earn a degree or additional certifications for your current or future position. Most employers consider additional related certifications and degrees a plus, and are willing to pay you for your expertise. Even if you have the skills and the experience, it won't matter if you don't have a piece of paper showing some form of formal educational training. Research which courses or degrees apply to your field. Find out what you’ll have to do to earn them. Speak with your employer beforehand to discuss your idea. There may even be tuition assistance offered by your employer, specifically for furthering your education in your given field.
2) Network and make connections with your online colleagues. College is an excellent place to meet other students, professionals, and professors who may be able to help you in your future endeavors. Networking is such a huge aspect of any business, so having a good group of contacts and support can be the difference between success and failure. Online colleges offer built in opportunities to meet other people in your field, even if those meetings are virtual. Take it upon yourself to standout amongst your peers, get to know others and leave a positive, lasting impression. You never know who you're working with.
3) Self Discipline is something that you have to learn to master when you're committed to a demanding schedule. You literally have to juggle work, school and family responsibilities to complete online school. This acquired skill set will pour over into your work and allow you to practice excellent time management skills. This is something that upper management is bound to notice. You'll also get better at setting goals and working towards them.
4) Increased skills and knowledge will boost your salary and advance your career. After the completion of your online courses, you'll not only have the degrees and credentials, but also the knowledge and skills that you gained in the process. Use these new set of skills to better position yourself at work. The confidence that you'll gain from your new education will allow you to compete in the workplace, and have sense of respect amongst your peers.
