The liver is one of the hardest working body organs, that helps in digesting food, converting it to energy, and then storing that energy for later use. Not only this, but the liver also filters toxic substances from the blood. However, if your liver is not working properly, then there can be some serious health effects on you. Therefore, it is highly important to know about the common signs of liver damage, so that you can save your precious body organ as soon as possible. Some Common Signs of Liver DamageDo you want to know some common signs of liver damage that require your attention? Let’s have a look at the options given below in this regard:

1.       Fluid Retention

Fluid retention is the most common liver damage sign which occurs in almost 50% of the people suffering from cirrhosis. Fluid accumulation can cause swelling in the legs and distension in the abdomen. This can happen due to the development of high blood pressure in liver veins or when the liver isn’t making albumin properly.

2.       Yellowish Skin and Eyes (Jaundice)

This is the condition that can cause a yellowish tint in the patient’s white of the eyes and skin and darker urine. This will appear when bilirubin, which is a pigment formed with the breakdown of red blood cells, builds up in the bloodstream.A healthy liver can absorb this pigment, convert into bile and then excrete that into the stool. Jaundice is a severe liver failure sign, and it is important to consult a doctor.

3.       Nausea

Nausea is one of the most common signs of liver damage. This problem can occur because of the buildup of toxins in the bloodstream. Due to the decreased ability of the liver, the liver would not be able to filter toxins from the bloodstream.

4.       Confusion or Forgetfulness

Unluckily, the liver failure hepatic encephalopathy has the ability to mess with the ability to understand things. This problem can lead you to the problem of getting confused really quickly even with normal things. Also, liver damage can lead you to start forgetting things and your memory may get worse. There is a reason for that. Because with liver failure, it won’t remove toxins properly from the blood. Consequently, these will start building up in the brain and the condition is called encephalopathy and one of the effects of this is memory loss.

5.       Swelling on Ankles and Legs

As to Mayo Clinic, there can be any cause behind a liver disease ranging from obesity to the use of alcohol. However, one of the most common signs that can depict you about a problem in your liver is probably the most unexpected and overlooked one. That is swelling in the legs and ankles. If you are having puffiness around your ankles and legs and you have no idea why it’s here, a visit to the doctor might be necessary to make sure if it’s not something serious.Whenever you are experiencing any of these or other common signs of liver damage, it is highly recommended to visit a doctor as soon as possible.
