Written by Dr Andrew Napier
Nowadays, people needs to spend a lot of time standing or sitting at work and even at home too. No wonder backache or lower body pain keeps tiring people so often. It seems only doctor could help in this situation, but let's see, maybe you can do something by yourself?
What is Sciatica? Sciatic nerve is the longest one in the human body, formed from the lower part of the spinal cord. This nerve begins in the lower back, divides in two sides, goes through the buttock, down the leg and ends at the foot.
The pain occurs when the damage is made for the sciatic nerve, mostly on the one side of the body. Sciatica is not a disease itself, but is a symptom of other illnesses. This condition usually is not very serious and can be treated in a few weeks, though sometimes even the surgery is needed.
Causes: People who spend long hours standing or sitting in an imperfect posture generally suffers from sciatica. Furthermore, sometimes it may occur when lifting something. Less commonly sciatica can be caused by injury or infection.
Symptoms: The salient symptom is a severe pain in the lower extremities of the body, from the base of the spine, until the end of the lower limb. Other symptoms may be a tingling, numbness or a burning sensation running through the sciatic nerve. Ache gets worse when sitting or standing for a long time, or when trying to stand up.
Home Remedies: First of all, you need to visit your doctor and find out the reason behind the pain. Diagnosis is very important because, as I mentioned before, sciatica can be caused by two reasons and one of them needs the surgery.
Here we have a few simple but effective home remedies, which can help you to feel better -
Juice: Potato and celery leaves juice are said to be a very beneficial remedy from the pain, you can also add carrot and beetroots. Drink at least 10 ounces of this mixture daily.
Get Up Slowly: When you wake up, do not jump out of the bed. Do it in a lazy fashion in phases and let your body to adjust. You should do the same after sitting for a long time.
Elderberries: Juice or tea of elderberries can relax your muscles effectively and relieve the severe pain.
Garlic: It is a well known anti-oxidant which has antibacterial and other useful activities. Garlic improves blood circulation, warms up the body and gives you more energy. Grind two little cloves of garlic and put in half cup of milk and boil, drink this mixture twice a day. This is one of the most beneficial ways to soothe the ache.
However, be careful while taking garlic as it may be harmful in a few cases. You should take the advice of your doctor if you take anticoagulants, or if you have ulcers.
Water: Have a bath or take a warm shower then turn on the cold water shortly. This procedure relaxes muscles, improves blood circulation and soothes deep pain.
Furthermore, to avoid sciatica take breaks while you are sitting or standing for a long time and also make sure that your posture is good. Spend at least thirty minutes in the fresh air daily. Be careful about your diet, and make sure it is well-balanced.
