Our four-legged friends make our lives a lot happier, more fun and active. We love them and they love us … well, most of the time they do. Being a good pet owner is a great responsibility. We must keep them well fed, healthy and safe, and most importantly, treat them like family members. The only difference is that unlike everyone else, you can’t ask them to clean after themselves.

Cat and dog hair is the biggest and most common problem among pet owners, especially when there are babies in the house. Cleaning pet hair takes a lot of time and a lot of trial and error to find the best method. In this article, we will discuss the five most effective ways of managing pet hair.

Dress your pet

“Pet hair management” starts from prevention. Try to cover your pet, so that it does not shed a lot of fur around the house. As a result, you will have very little hair to deal with daily.

Some pet owners are against dressing their pets because it can be very uncomfortable and can make them aggressive. If you do decide to dress, you pet then follow its patterns and if it does not like the covering and changes behavior then do not force it. Plus, the dress should not be anything fancy and uncomfortable, a simple shirt is more than enough.

Brush your pet consistently

It is better to have all the hair in one location and clean it up. So, as much as you like putting off brushing, if you want to reduce the amount of fur, you need to brush your pet every day or at least every other day.

During daily brushing, you will get all the hair off your pet that would otherwise be shed and left in every corner of your house, even the most remote ones. If you have more than one pet and brushing takes hours, then you can skip the daily brush but try to do it at least once a week to notice the difference.

If your pet is very furry, make sure you use a de-shedding tool, which will clean as much of the loose hair as possible. Some companies even make vacuum attachments special for dogs, but you have to make sure your dog is comfortable with that before you use it.

Strategic carpeting

I know it sounds strange but carpeting your house strategically can help you deal with pet hair a lot more effectively. Use throw rugs to cover up your floor or bigger carpet. Throw rugs are smaller in size and easy to clean, so you can use them in areas, where your pet spends most of its time. For example, dogs love sitting in front of the door, so there you go, throw a rug there and vacuum only that instead of the whole carpet.

Don’t postpone grooming bathing

Unless you are lucky, and your pet loves bath, the struggle is real, but it pays off in the long run. Just like frequent brushing, bathing also helps get rid of the additional fur that ends up on your floor and furniture. Similarly, do not skip grooming appointments, it will spare you a lot of unwanted hair around the house.

If you absolutely can’t do it yourself, you can always make an appointment with a groomer and they will take care of the haircut and the bath. You can also do sessions of de-shedding, which will relatively reduce the hair.

Vacuum more often

No matter how hard you try, there is still going to be some hair on your floors, carpets and furniture. Only lint rollers are not enough, so vacuum cleaner becomes your best friend. It does take time and create noise in the house, but you can use a robotic vacuum cleaner to clean the floors and carpets. And when the robotic cleaner does its magic, in the meantime, you can vacuum the furniture and curtains.

Your sofa and curtains tend to collect and keep a lot of pet hair, so once a week, vacuum them as well. If your sofa has a covering, wash it once a month.
