Car Tracking Systems - Protecting Your Car From Theft
Written by John Mahoney
When it comes to protecting your automobile from theft, there weren’t always a lot of options available to you. You could be among those that said, “it won’t happen to me.” Or be among those who paid a hefty fee in order to secure their car with a car alarm before they came standard. But even still, a car alarm didn’t guarantee that your vehicle would be safe from theft because you’d still have to get to your vehicle to prevent the theft. Now, with the advances in technology, you don’t have to prevent a car theft from happening. With a GPS, or global Positioning System, in your vehicle’s computer, your car can be tracked anywhere it goes from a central tracking facility. This allows your car to be recovered in the event that it does get stolen. And as an added bonus, if you are ever in an accident, the GPS system also has a safety feature that will alert emergency authorities to your whereabouts so that you can receive medical treatment if needed.
The vast number of car tracking systems that are now available to protect your car from theft can make your decision to buy one a very drawn out process. The best thing you can do is decide what you want out of the product and how it will need to work for you, as well as set a budget on how much you are willing to spend on the product. One thing to be aware of is that some of the products require a monthly activation fee to keep the service on-going. If you don’t budget this fee in, you can find yourself with a disabled product when you need it most. The products that require a monthly fee are generally always connected to a central hub that monitors all activity around your vehicle, kind of like the ADT Home Security system does for your house, in providing 24-hour surveillance. However, don’t be alarmed that the only way to get a tracking system is to pay a monthly fee. There are several models available that don’t require it. One, is the LoJack which uses a transponder and a receiver. The transponder is attached to your vehicle and is only activated when your vehicle is stolen and the authorities use the receiver to pinpoint your car’s location according to the frequency that the transponder is emitting.
ATX Technologies and RoadTrac are two of the leading companies that offer GPS tracking systems that are connected to a satellite network. These car tracking systems allow a vehicle to be tracked on a computer monitor, making it easier for the vehicle to be found. However, these systems are much more costly than those that were mentioned earlier and a lot more thought should be put into your decision to purchase one of these systems. For instance, if you have an older vehicle, such as a 1980 Plymouth, you may want to rethink your need for this particular tracking system. But, if you have a 2008 Porsche or Lamborghini then, spending the extra money for the security and peace of mind can well be worth it.
Many car tracking systems now come standard with extra features that can prove to be handy. One such feature is the ability for you to monitor your vehicle via the internet. This can be an extremely useful feature if you have teenagers and are always conce
ed with their whereabouts. There are also additional features that allow you to receive notifications when checkups and maintenance are needed in order to fix mechanical problems. A lot of newer models of cars are starting to become standard with these features, which are making them quite popular from a safety standpoint.
