If you have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), your best line of defence appears to lie in ways to prevent your exposure to known allergens and irritants. This would give your body a chance to heal itself. However, you would find that it can be an almost impossible task to completely eliminate your exposure, since most products have synthetic chemicals in them and there is always pollution in the air. There are however detoxification treatments for MCS that you can consider, so as to help alleviate the symptoms that you suffer from, such as irritated eyes, itchy skin and other bodily reactions.

One such detoxification treatment can be found in a sauna. Saunas are used by many cultures for detoxification and cleansing. Saunas are a great way to eliminate environmental chemicals that are stored in your fat cells. Choose a sauna that uses dry heat and that has not been treated with toxic chemicals.

If you feel hungry, have just eaten or feel weak, you should not be going for a sauna. Before a sauna, you should perform between 20 to 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise. Then, sit in the sauna for between 10 to 45 minutes. Additionally, you may want to consume niacin supplements. Of course, you should consult your doctor about using a sauna detoxification treatment for MCS before getting started.

You can also use contrast showers as a detoxification treatment for MCS. Contrast showers will increase micro circulation in your body tissues. They can assist in replacing your damaged and stressed tissues with nutrients, oxygen and immune cells. Your body will also expedite the removal of metabolic waste, inflammatory by-products and other toxic substances, with this detoxification treatment. They also help strengthen your immune system by increasing your white blood cells.

You will need to alternate hot and cold water as you take a contrast shower. Simply have 3 minutes of hot water followed by 1 minute of cold water. You should repeat this at least once, always ending with cold water.

You also need to be watchful over your diet. You would need to drink between 8 and 12 glasses of water each day. If you intend to do sauna cleansing, then you will need to drink more water. Liquid mineral supplements can also help. However, if you have heart or kidney disease, then you should talk to your doctor about taking these supplements.

Skin brushing can also be used to as a detoxification treatment for MCS. Skin brushing helps to facilitate the cleansing of your skin by stimulating your lymphatic system. As such, toxins will be eliminated through your skin. Skin brushing will also improve your blood circulation and remove the dead skin cells that clog your pores. You will need a long handled natural bristle brush for skin brushing. Purchase this brush at your local health food store. If, you cannot find such a brush, you can always use a loofah sponge instead.

For skin brushing, begin with the soles of your feet. Apply light pressure while brushing your skin in small circular motion. Move up to your stomach, then from the palms of your hands towards your chest and finally with your scalp. Avoid brushing your face, breasts or any other sensitive areas. Best time to skin brush is in the morning or in the evening. You can also skin brush while in a contrast shower.

While you would not be able to control factors outside your home, you can always make your home a safer environment. Here are some tips for what you can do at home:

1. Use area rugs that are made out of natural material and do not have a stain resistant finish.
2. Remove all of the carpeting in your home.
3. Do not have tobacco smoke.
4. Install an air filter or seal off ductwork.
5. Remove any natural textiles that have chemical finishes on them.
6. Remove or seal off the fireplace in your home.
7. Use an air exchanger to filter the air in your home.
8. Use furniture that is made out of solid wood.
9. Do not use any man-made textiles in your home.
10. Use only organic fiber that has no chemicals.

While you are outside your home, these are some exposure areas that you should avoid. These include:
1. New buildings
2. Stores that sell seasonal merchandise
3. Clothing that has to be dry clean
4. Stores that sell leather products
5. Moist or damp areas
6. People who wear fragrance such as perfume or cologne.
