Do you have a support system that works in your life? Have you surrounded yourself with people who will listen to your new ideas, help you with problem solving
and act as a cheerleader for you?

The work I do as a coach includes support, brainstorming, problem solving and being an advocate for my clients’ success. I have noticed, as I work with clients, that they also want and need the support of others. Too often, I find that they are looking to their family to get that support when it has never been there and may never be there for them.

Our families should support us and love us unconditionally, but the reality is, many people have families that are not supportive, have their own agendas or don’t care to see you grow and evolve.

If you grew up in a supportive, nurturing environment, I encourage you to take time this week to acknowledge all the people who have had a positive influence on you. Call those people up or write them a letter and express how they have had a positive impact on your life.

If your family doesn’t encourage you, support you or seem to care how you are doing and what you are up to, stop looking to them for that support. Find people who are interested in what you are doing and how you are doing and nurture those relationships. Stop trying to get others to behave differently even if they should. You can’t change anyone else, but you can change the people with whom you surround yourself.

You don’t need to abandon your family, you just need to stop expecting them change who they are and stop expecting them to miraculously turn into your cheerleader. Focus on the things that you do like about your family and offer your support to them, but find other like-minded people who have your success and well-being as a priority.

There are many types of support groups. Find a group to join that will provide the support you need and want. If you can’t find a group that meets your needs, create one. Start a success group, a mastermind group or a life-makeover group.

You can also hire a coach, find a mentor or partner up with a friend to get the support you need to address your challenges, create a success plan and also to celebrate along the way.
