For years, people have wondered about the source for my system of Face Reading Secrets (R), a major step forward for anyone who has ever wondered about body language.

Face reading is the 5,000-year-old art of going beyond expression to learn about character from the physical face. I first encountered physiognomy, or face reading, in 1975. My introduction came by chance, perhaps much as you are reading this article now, when I heard a talk about it at a MENSA meeting.

Thus began my interest. Lailan Young, the great proponent of ancient Chinese siang mien, was my favorite author. But I eventually read every physiognomy book in the English language, skimming over the parts that did not speak to me and devouring everything that seemed like truth. Then I developed a trademarked system, Face Reading Secrets (R).

People often ask whom I studied with, and the biggest influence on my work was not a physiognomist at all. For 17 years, from 1969 to 1986, I worked as a teacher for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. That connection to meditation is the real answer.

Not that my former guru taught face reading -- he did not. But the origin of my system is specifically this: Physiognomy books taught me key concepts and the categories for understanding, physical details like high ear position and cheek proportions. As a researcher of inner life, I had earned how to bring my awareness to a level of truth, right before transcendence, where one can find the answer to any worthwhile question. Whenever interpretations from siang mien or Whiteside's work or any of the other face reading authors did not satisfy me (which was most of the time), I asked inside for the interpretations that rang with truth.
