Happy people never concern themselves with past events, and never question whether they or anyone else could have done something other than what they did.

But unhappy people think that they or someone else could have done something differently, or could have spoken, or thought, or felt something differently. This idea adds to unhappiness and makes people more unhappy.

So if you could be absolutely certain that nothing could have been different, then you could be less unhappy, and maybe could become very happy, or at least contented.

The truth is that nothing could have been different. It is especially true that no person could have thought, or felt, or said, or done anything different from what they did think, or feel, or say, or do. Another way to say this is FREE WILL IS IMAGINARY. There is no such thing as free will.

Many scientists and medical people already know this. They know this for several reasons. One reason is that we do our thinking in our brain, and our brain works by chemical processes. Whatever happens has to happen. Another reason comes from logic. If we had free will it would have to be random will. But we know that our will is not random. It happens because of reasons and causes, and it stays the same for seconds, at least, and sometimes for minutes and hours.

For many centuries free will was presumed to exist because we have an emotional need to judge and to blame. We blame ourselves and we blame others. If there is no free will then it is hard to blame anyone.

But the scientific fact is that everything happens as part of continuous processes, and because of reasons and causes. Free will is fictional, not real.

People who need to blame themselves and others will continue to think that free will is real, because for them the feeling is more important than knowledge. People who want to stop blaming themselves or others should know that free will is false.

If you read the New Testament you can see that Jesus knew people don't have free will. He could predict what would happen in the future, knowing that nobody could choose to escape from the processes already at work. Perhaps that's why He knew that forgiveness is always the correct action.

Everyone has will, but no one has free will. You can use this information to begin treating yourself and others differently, starting today. Is there someone obnoxious in your life? That person did not choose to be obnoxious!
