Are you tired of seeing that road map across your face every time you look in a mirror? The good news is that there are some non-surgical methods that will actually improve the appearance of your skin. Before I get into the different types of products that are available, we need to discuss the three main causes of premature aging. We can’t do anything about genetics, so let’s focus on the things we can control. Number one would be overexposure to the sun, those rays can have your skin looking like leather saddlebags in no time. Always wear a good sun block and protective clothing when you will be out in the sun for extended periods of time. Number two is letting the body become de-hydrated, not consuming enough water will cause the skin to become dry and wrinkled, and number three, as if you didn’t see this one coming, quit smoking. You can always tell if someone is a heavy smoker by the condition of their skin. If you are serious about having better looking skin, make sure and follow the advice on these three key points.
Though not exotic, these common sense methods will help your skin care products be more effective in their use. Let’s start with a naturally based pH correct premium skin cleanser that cleans without stripping or drying and is void of harmful chemicals that can damage your skin, followed by a balancing toner that will remove any traces of the cleanser and restore balance to maximize moisture retention. The next step is to apply a good moisturizing product to finish the regimen. Skin care products with peptides, or protein strands, actually do work to improve appearance. Peptides function as messengers in the skin, allowing the epidermis and dermis to communicate more efficiently, helping production of collagen as well as increasing the elasticity of the skin. The cheaper products you see that say they have collagen as an ingredient are more smoke and mirrors than anything else, because the collagen doesn’t penetrate the skin layers. The body has to be prompted to produce its own collagen for any visible effect.
Mineral oil is something you need to stay away from as well. It tends to clog the pores of the skin, trapping bacteria and dirt, so make sure your skin care and makeup products are free of this ingredient. A personal preference of mine is to stay away from products that use animal by-products or engage in animal testing. The thought of rendered animal fat on my skin just sounds terrible, and as far as animal testing goes, I want products that are dermatologist tested on humans. Imagine the outrage if we found out they were testing heartworm pills or flea dips on humans. To be scientifically sound, a study group should be comprised of the group that will actually be using the product. We live in a toxic world, so do your homework and keep your exposure to harmful chemicals to a minimum. Read and understand the ingredients lists, and do not let price be the single deciding factor in your purchase.
