Written by Debbie Turner
Taking vacations are good for us in so many different ways. In order to keep a strong state of mental health, our human body needs an outlet for releasing stress and a source of replenishment. An ideal vacation should eliminate stress, encourage relaxation and provide opportunities for rejuvenation making the benefits experience considerable.
From a career perspective, vacations are necessary for you to be productive and efficient at work. In fact, according to study employees who are overworked or those who do not take vacations are more likely to:
• Make mistakesn • Be angry at their employers and colleagues who do not work as hard as they aren • Have higher stress levelsn • Feel symptoms of clinical depressio
• Neglect themselves and report poor health
Relationships also take to benefit from your vacation time and create irreplaceable new memories with your family and friends. It’s time to cast in your vacation days.
Many of us are workaholics. We enjoy being busy and business pressures and challenges keep our adrenaline pumping. Our scheduled for leisure activities are too hectic and there never seem enough time in the day or night that we think we should skip our vacation days so that we don’t miss anything. This mindset is self crushing. You can prove your worth at work and improve your health, mind and relationships by scheduling and taking your allotment of vacation days.
Stress generates physiological changes in our bodies that include high blood pressure and a surge in stress hormones such as adrenaline which can cause blood clot and increase the risk of heart attack and by working all of the time; we are constantly subjecting our body to these responses. This is the reason why medical experts suggest having a vacation because being workaholic is not doing our health any favor.
Preparing for a trip is so exciting. It will stimulate our imagination and everything involved in the anticipation phase of a holiday trip can be relaxing. It will also give us something to look forward to and weighing our options offers us a break from our regular routine, as we daydream about the pros and cons of different types of vacation escapades.
The point of having a vacation is to relax and enjoy yourself, yet many of us get so bogged down with the details, the expectations and mindset of having a perfect trip that we create further undue to stress. It’s not uncommon to feel like you need a vacation after the vacation, because it took the entire vacation to wind down and begin to relax and let go of all the baggage from work and the stresses of life. So plan ahead and make it just as much fun as the vacation itself. Make a list early and little by little begin to collect things and pack. Just seeing your suitcase on the floor in the corner will brighten your day, knowing that relaxation for you is on the way.
Vacations don’t have to be expensive or add to the stress for the family on a budget. There are travel club memberships on the market that allow families to take 7 night stays worldwide starting at just $298 for the week. Additionally, many families enjoy things like camping and hiking and for the cost of the campground and gas to get there, it’s a fun filled, relaxing week. It’s what you make it. It’s about letting your mind and body go into a relaxed, no stress, take care of you mode.
Having a vacation is an ultimate tool in stress management. Whether we take a nap on a beach chair or snore under the stars, we will feel that we sleep better when we are on a vacation. The expression that states “A change is as good as a rest” perfectly describes vacation time. When we change our focus and pace, our mind and body relax.
Vacationing gives us the opportunity to look beyond the tip of our nose to see new places and experience new adventures that will increase your awareness of the world both geographically and culturally.
Being on a break allows us to spend some time alone. This is a significant part of any wellness program. Benefit from the change of pace and take time to reflect on our accomplishments and perhaps reassess our personal goals and responsibilities. We may find that being on a vacation increases our overall life satisfaction. When we take advantage of the opportunity to think of different things than just home or business responsibilities, we can get to enjoy life even more.
If we feel bored with our day to day routine or find ourselves losing interest in activities that we usually enjoy, this is the time to book a vacation because regular vacations decreases our chances of burning out. Being burnout is a terrible waste. This is our major failure of not making time for ourselves.
Vacations allow us to boost our spirit, no matter what type of holiday we plan. Vacations will return us re-energized, more creative and more committed to our career, to our family and friends and even on our own health because breaking out of our regular routine for a week or two will renew our energy and enthusiasm.
Taking regular vacations will help us live longer. We will find ourselves breathing deeper and easier and the tension in our shoulders will disappear. Our back will be straighter. Our muscles will be strengthen from walking on a beach, swinging a golf club or casting a fishing line. We will eat better and making conscious choices about our meals instead of always taking a snack.
Vacations have protective effect because it helps us to reduce our load of stress or at least allow us to take a break from the everyday stressors of the workplace and in our own home. If we are on a vacation we tend to pack more hours of sleep and exercise which are good for our health.
Splitting our daily routine is what vacation is all about. Taking care of our body and mind by scheduling vacation time shows maturity, responsibility and self-confidence.
