Natural Sleep Aid Remedies
Written by Therese Patterson
Natural sleep remedies have been around many generations and if you are among the 30 percent of Americans who suffer from insomnia, one of these natural sleep remedies may be just what the doctor ordered. They are not miracle cures, some may take several weeks to work but many have been proven to make a noticeable difference. Popular natural insomnia treatments often include the herbal sleep aid Valerian Root. Valerian has been used as a sleep aid for over 1,000 years. Unlike some prescription sleep aids, valerian is not known to cause morning grogginess and is non-addictive. Studies have found that taking such supplements can help improve the quality of sleep.
Melatonin is another popular natural cure for insomnia. While our bodies produce a certain amount on their own, taking it in supplement form can help us make sure we get the necessary amount we need to get the restful sleep we all require. Melatonin is the hormone responsible for sleep and for regulating our sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin is produced by the pineal gland with levels sharply declining with age. Clinical studies of this herbal insomnia remedy find that it is quite effective.
Another natural insomnia remedy is the B-complex vitamin. Research has shown that deficiency in B-complex may lead to sleep problems and taking a supplement has been a very effective natural cure for insomnia. B vitamins are a collection of eight vitamins essential for our various metabolic processes. Most of these vitamins can’t be stored by the body and extended cooking, food processing and alcohol can destroy or reduce the availability of many of these B vitamins.
Many people in search of natural insomnia treatments have also had good luck taking a 5-HTP herbal remedy. L-5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is converted by the body to serotonin, which is a major neurotransmitter of the central nervous system. Maintaining healthy levels of serotonin is important because low levels are associated with symptoms of low mood, feelings of anxiety, overweight and overeating, carbohydrate craving, and occasional sleeplessness.
One of the best sleep aids, tryptophan, is no longer available in U.S. health food stores, but soy protein, turkey, milk, and almonds all contain tryptophan and could be eaten as a bedtime snack. (Vitamin B-6 is needed to convert tryptophan to serotonin, which is sleep-inducing).
Calcium is another natural tranquilizer, as is magnesium and potassium. A calcium deficiency produces muscle spasms and cramps, anxiety, nervousness, irritability, insomnia and headaches, among other symptoms. Many of the same symptoms occur in a magnesium deficiency, which can also cause heart palpitations and constipation. Vitamin D is important in the process of Calcium absorption. Calcium and magnesium should be taken together.
Chamomile is known as a mild herb but can be surprisingly effective as a natural sleep aid. It promotes sleep with tranquilizing action similar to some drugs. Chamomile also helps reduce stress related chemicals in the brain and promotes adrenal health. *Note : best not used for extended periods without a break. Avoid it if you are allergic to ragweed.
A wide variety of proven natural cures for insomnia are available and can help you get your needed sleep while making sure you do not become dependant on pharmaceutical drugs. Natural insomnia treatments are numerous and one remedy may work for one person but not another. Try one at a time for an extended period to determine if it is suitable for you. From melatonin, to B vitamin complex, and herbal insomnia remedy 5-HTP, a good night’s sleep is just a couple of mouse-clicks away!
