***Top 10 Job Search Tips
Written by David Couper, The Official Guide To Career Change
- Make a Plan - Sure, you could just start sending a halfhearted resume out to everyone with a job opening, but the odds are that it won’t work out too well for you. You need to take an hour or two, and actually sit down and thing about what you want to do, the type of jobs that you will want to apply for, and so forth. Having a plan will help you along the way, because you can refer back to it anytime you start to feel lost.
- Polish Your Resume - This is one of the most important, because your resume is what sets you apart from all the other applicants. It’s normally the first thing that potential employers see. They can’t see the enthusiasm on your face, so you must make it come through on your resume.
- Start Sending Your Resume Out - Many companies still take resumes in person, while others want them to be faxed or sent over the internet.
- Start Networking - The more people you talk to the better. You will probably find out that more than a few of your neighbors or acquaintances know what is going on in your area, and they probably hear about job openings that you may not have found by yourself.
- Follow up on your applications - if you haven’t heard anything, call them and ask if they received the resume in the first place!
- Make Time for Interviews - this is very important too. Clear your schedule if possible, and be ready to make a great impression.
- Wear the right clothes - You don’t always have to wear a suit and tie, but make it professional at least!
- Leave out the negatives - don’t talk bad about your previous job!
