The History of Tennis Sport Ancient Romans, Egyptians and Greece were believed to play tennis. The word ""tennis"" derived from a town in Egypt named ""Tinis""; while the word ""racquet"" stemmed from ""rahat"" (an Arabic word) meaning the ""palm of the hand"". Meanwhile, other historians believed that the sport began in the 11th century when French monks played handball over the rope. The game was then called jeu de paume or ""game of the hand"". The sport spread to other countries like England (called lawn tennis in 19th century) and became one of the popular sports up to date. Tennis is an Olympic sport that can be played in singles or doubles (two teams of two players). The player holds the racquet and strikes a rubber ball over the net of the opponent's court. An interesting form of the sport is the wheelchair tennis where disabled individuals can still play the sport through their wheel chairs.
