A Brief History of The Town of Idyllwild History and Activities While Staying There.

History:

Many years ago, Idyllwild was called "Strawberry Valley" due to the wild strawberries that was found along Strawberry Creek. Shepherds were frequent visitors in the valley, and the Domenigoni Family of San Jacinto Valley visited this location often. In the early 1880s, they began farming land in this area, which would eventually become the Idyllwild Arts Academy. A toll road was built from Hemet in 1876 that opened up Idyllwild to tourism, settlement and logging. Loggers eliminated much of the forest area between 1876 and 1901, providing this area additional open space. In 1889, George and Sarah Hannahs built a summer camp close to to the site of their sawmill in upper Dutch Flat which they named "Camp Idyllwilde". The two later built a post office at the lower valley in 1893, which was called "Rayneta," after their two children, Raymond and Henrieta.
Small town life:

Idyllwild offers beautiful blue skies, glistening streams in the summer, and fresh crisp air. It is just 1 hour away from Palm Springs (54 miles) and Riverside (58 miles)m and situated barely two hours away from Los Angeles (110 miles) and San Diego (117 miles). Idyllwild has great hiking and mountain climbing and top-notch restaurants, regularly with live entertainment., It has a small movie theater that hosts a film festival in the summer. it's an artist's town with a lot of galleries, the world famous Idyllwild Arts Academy and Summer Program, and lots art events spread out throughout the year. It's a place to breathe easy and enjoy along with some hiking, dining, shopping, fishing, rock climbing, animal watching, or just do nothing at all. Idyllwild is the perfect place to get away from city life at reasonable cost.
Backpacking:

The San Jacinto Mountains of Califo
ia harbor two unique granite cliffs that overlook the town of Idyllwild. These cliffs called Tahquitz and Suicide Rocks reach up eight thousand feet above sea level and about eight hundred feet in height. San Jacinto can easily be backpacked in a weekend, although three days will feel more like a vacation. San Jacinto Peak This trek goes to the tallest mountain top in the area, exceeding 10,800 feet in elevation. The trek to Round Valley Camp is 2.5 miles; Tamarack Camp is yet another half-mile north on a spur trail and definitely worth the extra fifteen min of walking for the wildlife it offers. This climbing area is historical due to that some of the original free climbs were done at this location about 70 years ago. Climbers were attracted from around the planet and set the stage for additional establishment of routes. The beautiful trails and great variety of climbs in Idyllwild will satisfy climbers of all levels. Check water availability with the rangers prior to heading out.
Renting:

Idyllwild has some hotels, but frequently you should try and find a bed and breakfast or a private cabin to spend your time among the pines. When you awake in the morning and have breakfast on the terrace, watching the industrious squirrels in the pines and inhaling the clear mountain air, then you know you have arrived.
