A Brief Overview Of Advanced Placement Highschool Courses Online
Written by Verana Mathusa
In order for students to take these advance placement classes, also known as AP classes, they must get permission and approval from their high school principal or academic advisor. A great many high schools have a partnership with a specific college, which means the course credits will be recognized by that college as well as other accredited colleges and programs. The student needs to make sure the course they want to take is recognized as a credited class by both their high school and the college affiliate.
There are a variety of classes students can take that count for dual credits. Many high schools offer college algebra, upper level English classes and upper level History classes as dual credit courses. While some schools may not offer these types of courses, they may accept credits for courses offered by a college, university or online programs. There may also be classes in psychology, public speaking, sociology or upper level language courses offered by these institutions. These courses may vary from school to school and the student is advised to check with their academic advisor or counselor to make sure the credits will count toward their high school diploma before enrolling in them.
Students may be required to take certain assessment tests before they are allowed to enroll in advanced placement high school course online. These assessment tests may include the ACT, SAT and/or COMPASS tests. Another major factor that may be used to determine whether or not a student may be approved to take one of these courses is their GPA. On average, AP students should have a 3.0 GPA or better when using a 4.0 scale or a 7.0 GPA or higher when using an 11.0 scale.
There are many reasons why a student may want to take an advanced placement high school course online. It may be less expensive to take the course while in high school instead of waiting to take it in college. Taking the course can show colleges that the student is already at that level of learning and can manage the course work. This may help the student get accepted into the school of their choice. It may keep the student engaged in the learning process as the courses are more challenging than standard high school courses and thus help guide them toward actually achieving a high school diploma.
