A Little About Carrbrook Near Stalybridge
Written by Mat Fay
Stalybridge is situated within the Borough of Tameside in Greater Manchester and lies nine miles east of Manchester city centre. In 1776, a cotton mill was built here and thus Stalybridge became a major centre of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution, one of the first in the country. This led to a substantial transformation in the area. Hitherto an area peppered with small farms and homesteads, Stalybridge became a thriving and bustling town. With the decline of the cotton industry at the beginning of the twentieth century however, the area reverted to a semi-rural character that it has retained to the present day. Stalybridge is ideally located at the foothills of the Pennines, where it proudly straddles the River Tame -- a river that marks the ancient boundary that separates the counties of Cheshire and Lancashire. Also lying on the surrounds of the Peak District National Park, the town is home to the 1,309-feet high Wild Bank. Located at the tip of Hollingworthall Moor are the famous Stalybridge cairns, monuments to the existence of pre-historic man. One of these cairns is regarded as the finest Bronze Age monument in Tameside, subsequently it remains under official protection. Further historical treasures include a branch of the Roman road that connects the forts of Manchester to Melandra Castle. Among the areas of Stalybridge is Carrbrook, an area characterised by numerous seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings. The late nineteenth and early twentieth century industrial boon in the area also led to the construction of a magnificent purpose-built Print Works Village. While the area is now full of modern housing, many of these seventeenth and eighteenth century buildings still exist as does the Print Works Village, marking the area as one of significant architectural interest. Culturally, Carrbrook is mainly noted for its music. The local brass band take weekly rehearsals in Heyrod and play numerous concerts throughout the year. In addition, a brass band contest is held every year on Whit Friday. The contest, held outside the Buckton Vale Institute, is a lively affair and remains hugely popular among all the local communities. If hiking in the countryside is a favourite pastime of yours, then the Stalybridge Country Park situated in Carrbrook will be a welcome sight. Here you can take the 3/4-mile hike across very manageable and level ground. The route is lined with easy, surfaced paths and quiet country lanes and will take you through the pretty woodlands and grasslands lining the nearby moors. Take a picnic and stop at one of the many purpose-built picnic areas. Suffice to say, if you are thinking of relocating, the areas of Stalybridge and Carrbrook are well worth looking at.
