Scientists at the University of Cambridge recently published research that suggests that obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) might be caused by a misfiring in the brain that causes a loss of control over habitual, or compulsive, behavior.

"It's not just OCD; there are a range of human behaviors that are now considered examples of compulsivity, including drug and alcohol abuse and binge-eating," one of the scientists told Medical Daily. "What all these behaviors have in common is the loss of top-down control, perhaps due to miscommunication between regions that control our habit and those such as the prefrontal cortex that normally help control volitional behavior."

The study reported that treatment is crucial for patients to successfully change their ingrained behaviors, because over time these become involuntary compulsions.
