The modern era has seen a boom in all sorts of mobile devices in the market. Devices like mobiles, PDA, tablets etc have replaced the traditional way of working on fixed locations. From bank transaction to bill payment, daily news to horoscopes, social networking sites to video chats, reading documents to preparing presentations, all have become possible now with fast internet speeds, enhanced security, and increase in computational power of devices. This has created an ever-increasing demand of being able to do more and more on the move and get benefits from this new generation of devices.
This is where the host of available applications on the mobile devices plays a huge role. These application, usually referred to as mobile application provide a host of custom made or generic solutions to users to help them get more out of the available mobile eco-system. It describes a host of Internet applications that run on smart phones, PDAs, Tablets and other mobile devices and help user to access services more commonly available on desktops and laptops. If you just search the internet for such application, you would find millions of such applications available depending on the operating system and platform of your mobile devices.
Some of these mobile applications are free downloadable while others are provided by specific mobile vendors or operators as paid products. These paid mobile applications can be bought the same way as we buy grocery or household products from online sites via online stores referred to as Application stores. Application developers from a software development company can propose and publish their applications on the stores in collaboration with the mobile vendors and operators and are paid by a revenue sharing of the selling price.
There is an integrated development environment (IDE) for the various platforms, on which applications for mobile are developed. A number of development tools are provided by IDE for scripting, testing and deploying the application code written for the targeted platform environment. In an open development environment provided by some vendors, the IDE is made available globally and can be used by developer around the world to develop their own applications using the same. On the contrary, some vendors do not publish their IDE, rather believe in developing the application themselves, and sell them through application stores.
Mobile application can be developed to perform a plethora of activities. It may be a mobile web site book marking utility, a mobile-based instant messaging client, twitter, or facebook on mobile, friend locator (using GPS) on mobile, bill payment etc. The internet and application stores are flooded with all sorts of such useful applications and still demand for more new applications is ever-increasing. Another majorly used platform in development of mobile application is the Java Micro Edition (Java ME) platform. This is another major tool being progressively making its appearance felt in the embedded systems. It is truly considered as the most ubiquitous application for the mobile industry today and in near future.
