This is a lucrative industry that offers plenty of room for advancement. All of the various areas of the metalworking industry play a key role in modern construction and development. Knowing about the different specialties is a good way to learn about the full scope of this profession.
Many metal fabricators work in fabrication or machine shops. A growing number of metal fabrication companies offer both types of shops on their premises. The fabrication shops place most of their emphasis on assembling metal for work on various projects. Machine shops focus mainly on metal parts for machines used in the industry. Some metalworkers specialize in erecting steel at construction sites. Anyone who has a background in working with metal will find that there are a broad number of jobs available in related industries.
Welders are another example of metal fabricators. One of the most interesting things about welders is the number of different industries they work in. Many welders work in metal fabrication shops where they assemble the materials to be used for construction. There are other industries where welding is used. Welding is often used for plumbing projects where metal pipe is used. There is a constant demand for welders in areas where there are oil and natural gas lines. Some welders also work on offshore oilrigs. There is also a need for people with welding skills in companies that create iron fences or decorative iron items.
Many metal fabricators have experience using specialty methods that have been used for generations. Blacksmithing is considered to be part of the metal fabrication trade. In addition to creating horseshoes, blacksmiths have also repaired carriages and wagons. In medieval times, they also created swords and other weapons. Many metalworkers today possess the skills needed to create carriages, especially in rural areas where horses are still common. Metalworkers with exceptional skills often create beautiful replicas of swords used throughout different historical periods. A person who has experience working with different types of metal can easily specialize in whatever area of metalwork they like. It simply takes patience and a willingness to learn.
