I had tuition from when I was in Primary One until Secondary Four. My younger sister started from when she was Kindergarten Two. She started early because she wouldn’t leave me alone during my tuition lessons – insisting on playing with me, talking with me, peeping on me – she felt left out.

I, on the other hand, hated being forced to take supplementary lessons I did not need. After a succession of tutors who quit – one of whom pinched me – I realised that my mother was going to continue forcing tuition down my throat. I eventually settled on the one I thought was the nicest.

This did not reduce my continued distaste for tuition through the years.

Same old stuff – I was made to rehash the same materials already covered in school. It was as if there was a belief that reiteration would, by some miracle, make sure I would reproduce the textbook word for word during examinations.

Speeding ahead – With my tutor, we went through the lessons which would be later covered in school. Initially, there was the novelty of already knowing everything that the teacher was going to say. With time – the thrill gone, I gave myself permission to zone out/shut down/daydream during class itself.

Extra homework – Having been told repeatedly that I was ‘bad’ for not doing my tuition assignments, I brought them to school and had to do them during recess. There was simply too much – besides attending classes, doing my school homework, extra-curricular activities and tuition assignments.

At the ripe old age of eight (when I was in Primary Three), I asked my tutor what my life would be like if I dropped out of school. She asked me why I wanted to do so. I confided in her that I was so bored with life and with school that I could kill myself.

I didn’t know this then. Tuition killed my joy for learning. I was uninspired, unmotivated and bored out of my mind.

I didn’t want tuition. I didn’t even need tuition.

I was the child. And of course, I didn’t know what was good for me.

My mother, of course, took all the credit for my academic achievements. She thinks if not for the tuition during my foundational years, I would not be who I am today.

I know better. I know I would have had a much happier childhood, probably had a better attitude at school, and even paid better attention when I was actually in class. I might even have applied myself more fully in every task I was given.

Once I asked my mother, “What would it take for me to learn what I need to know as an adult?”

Her reply: “Everything you need to learn is in your textbooks.”

I believed her. I loved reading. Yet, in my naive mind, I thought everything that was outside of my school textbooks was frivolous. So any other reading materials, including storybooks and newspapers, were secondary – even a waste of precious time.

After all, if they were truly important, they would already be in the textbooks. The lessons in the textbooks must be important, since I had to cover the same ground repeatedly.

It wasn’t until much later that I realised that the world does not revolve around textbooks. There was much – in fact a whole lot – that one textbook could not possibly cover. My world opened up when I entered Polytechnic and was encouraged to ask questions, challenge facts, and formulate my own, unique, thoughts. It was the dawn of a new era for me.

I regret not being more curious about the world outside of textbooks. I regret not reading more. I regret being a ‘good’ girl – which meant doing the same English, Chinese, Mathematic, and Science exercises presented in slightly different arrangements, over and over.

Parents, rather than follow what your relatives, friends, and neighbours do, blindly, ask yourself the following questions:

* Does my child need it? Tuition is meant to be supplementary and for weaker students who do need the support. If your children are able to cope on their own, why force tuition upon them?
* Does my child enjoy it? If there comes a point when if your child is gloomy, depressed and hating those lessons, the price you pay might well be their joy for life and learning.
* Does my child have time to cultivate their own, true interests? It seems like common sense, but many children never learn to discern what they really want from what others (including their parents or peer group) want. Each child will have their own hobbies, pastimes and pursuits. Allocate opportunities for your child to be nurtured in the way they choose; it could be time to read, or by attending some form of enrichment lessons, from chess, ballet, sport, to piano and the like. The soul always needs to be nourished.

Advice:

* Don’t lie to your children to get them to do what you want them to do. Being manipulative will only come back and bite you in the end.
* Honour their truth: If they truly hate something, it manifests in more ways than one. Pay attention.
* Give them space. This includes time to play and to be a child.

Your children are little people who need your love, respect and trust. Yes, trust. Trust that all will be well. Let go when possible and appropriate. Controlling your children excessively does not necessarily make you better or more responsible parents, and certainly does not endear you to them.

In my opinion, the greatest gifts that parents can give their children include a curiosity of the world, a joy for life, a desire for learning and a heart for other people. Good luck!

When I was little, all I wanted was to grow up. Grown-ups rule the world – from controlling the television remote and operating all kinds of cool gadgets to being able to choose the time they went to bed. And then there is always the sentence “You will know when you grow up,” that made adulthood all the more alluring.

We all know what happened. I came of age. Now that I am finally ‘there’, I have to admit that there have been times when I wished I could turn back the clock and relive my childhood. This might be a typical case of the grass being greener on the other side.

I look at the little children of today and recognise that, without knowing it, they continually teach us some lessons we adults could benefit from. By children, I refer to the little ones 24 old months old and above. They are usually in kindergarten, old enough to begin to understand and young enough to feel that the world is their oyster.

One day at a time

Unlike adults, you are unlikely to see kids fretting over the loss of time. This has something to do with the fact that some of them are probably not old enough to tell time. Instead kids take each day, possibly even each moment, as it comes. They might have a weekly schedule at school, or a daily routine of things to do, yet you will be hard pressed to find a child worrying about what is to be done the next day. They are present, engaged and living life – one day a time.

Keen to laugh

Kids love fun. They look for the fun in every situation, in everything they do, and in everybody they meet. They do not take themselves or life seriously, and they certainly don’t carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. They love to laugh and they are even quicker in laughing at themselves. They love when you laugh and they enjoy being able to make you or any other person laugh. And since laughter is contagious, they laugh even harder when they see that you are laughing alongside them. Laughing make the world brighter, happier and fun. Have you forgotten your sense of humor and how to laugh?

Quick to forgive

Kids do not going around nursing grudges, plotting revenge or planning how to get even. A simple ‘sorry’ is sufficient. And even if an apology is not forthcoming, they are too plugged into life to worry about it. It is not uncommon to see a child sobbing one moment after being pushed to the floor by another, only to be playing alongside the same child who pushed them the next – as if it had never happened. They simply move on and focus on what is next – be it learning, playing or other ways of having fun.

Unafraid to ask

There is a reason for everything. The only way to find out is to ask. There are no dumb questions. Kids are not afraid to ask questions because they have no concept of fear, rejection or being labelled a failure. They are encouraged to ask questions and they will persist at asking until they understand the subject thoroughly. What would you ask if you knew you could ask anything and have no consequences?

Eager to learn

Kids are eager to make sense of the world around them. They are open to learning about everything put before them. It might take time. Yet you will seldom hear them lamenting about the difficulties of learning or complaining about how much time a task is taking. They try. They ask for help. Them they might try again. They recognise that they have lots to learn and they take the time.

So take the time today. Open your heart and forgive those who have wronged you. Smell the roses. Ask some questions. Learn something new. Laugh.
