What are Silicone Implants? This article provides information about the advantages of breast augmentation using silicone implants. Silicone implants are implants with a silicone rubber shell which has been filled with a set quantity of silicone gel. The shell surface may be textured or smooth and there are implants of different shapes, volumes, number of shell lumens, profile, and shell thickness. Augmentation mammoplasty with silicone implants means a voluptuous, feminine figure and a boost to your self-confidence. Silicone Implants Ensure Good Results Women looking for breast reconstruction or aged 22 and in need of cosmetic breast enhancement have the silicone implant option open to them. Presently, it is possible to place the silicone implants in three placement positions. These are over the muscle (subglandular), under the muscle (complete submuscular), or partial submuscular (the upper 2/3rd portion would be concealed by the muscle). Saline implants however are more commonly introduced in the submuscular position owing to a greater inclination to wrinkling and rippling. Given below are three other benefits of using a silicone implant:
  • They are natural in appearance and touch. The natural soft feel is a good option, particularly for women proceeding with a breast reconstruction after breast cancer.
  • Less likely to cause rippling which is a probablility with saline implants.
  • Silicone implants do not cause serious health problems.
One important concern associated with silicone implants is “silent rupture.” If saline implants rupture, the body absorbs the salt (saline) solution. The implant deflates when ruptured and so the problem can be detected. With the silicone implant, the gel may either remain inside the implant shell or come out of the shell in case of rupture. Sometimes, the symptoms may not be obvious to the eye. That is why the FDA has advised MRI exams beginning three years after the augmentation mammoplasty and then every two years to look for ruptures with silicone implants. Another concern is that unlike with saline implants, it is not possible to alter the size of regular prefiled silicone implants. The Right Plastic Surgeon Means Greater Success When considering breast augmentation surgery, it is important to find a skilled and trained surgeon with whom you feel extremely comfortable. If you approach the right plastic surgeon and follow his instructions for post-operative care and follow up, it is possible to reduce risks associated with silicone implants. Thus it is safe to say that the advantages of breast augmentation using silicone implants make it a smart cosmetic enhancement option for women desiring a fuller and more attractive bust line.
