Beginning using hydroponics might be pretty overwhelming as depending on what you would like to grow there may be a great deal of learning to gain. A straightforward and simple way to start obtaining knowledge in hydroponics and testing if it is for you is the Aerogarden. This is a compact machine which comfortably sits on a work top or anywhere in the kitchen or in your house. I have mine on the top of the freezer in the utility room. Presently I am growing fresh herbs and lettuce.

The unit comes all equipped with lights and a water section. Seed sets are obtainable from an Aerogarden distributor or your nearby hydroponics store. Each kit illustrates what you are able to grow on the front and they vary from different lettuce types, tomatoes, herbs, peppers, Italian herbs, chillies and much more. I've produced tomatoes, herbs and chillies although my favourite are the herbs and lettuce being an enthusiastic cook I find them very useful.

So how do you get started? The kit comes with complete instructions and seed holes which you put the seed pods from the sets in. Next it’s only a matter of filling up the water container to the level highlighted inside, placing the seed pods in and turning on the lights. Everything is then totally automatic. The lights switch on and turn off automatically so you don’t need to be troubled about turning lights on and off at the appropriate time for the produce to grow. Nutrients needed for the different crop varieties come in the seed sets and you add one at the start when the seed pods are added in the Aerogarden after which you can leave it alone. You will find two push buttons on the front of the device and these will flash to tell you whether to add further nutrients or add water, and that’s it. After that you just relax and watch and wait for the produce to grow, this should be from 3 weeks based upon on what you cultivating. Then you can acquire what you need from the crop and as long as you don’t cut too close to the roots they will continue to grow and you can keep harvesting.

I love my Aerogarden and would suggest it to anyone who wants to grow different crops but doesn't want the hassle of dirty soil and ongoing watering. It’s great for flats without gardens and for individuals who don’t have the capacity or time to cultivate produce from seed to crop. It is also a good way to get little ones to grow and eat one of their five a day. I believe Aerogarden are now manufacturing designs particularly designed for children to improve their awareness of where food comes from in a enjoyable way.
