Albertine Rift Valley and its Residents

Rwanda country located in East Africa, now best known for two things, namely, genocide, and gorillas. Fortunately the latter is part of the history and the country can focus on the former. As one of the best places to view the mountain gorillas and the spectacular scenery and a rich diversity of species, Rwanda quickly acquired the reputation of tourism map.

But why Rwanda is blessed? It has all to do with their place in the African continent. Rwanda is known as the Albertine rift geological phenomenon on the east coast.

Great Rift Valley stretches nearly 5000km from the Arabian peninsula in the northern expanses of Mozambique in East Africa. This is the African and Arabian tectonic plate separation process, which began about 35 million years ago in the north. The process continues in East Africa permanently separated from the rest of Africa along the East African Rift.

West feud, known as the Albertine Rift.

Albertine Rift stretches from the northern end of Lake Albert Lake Tanganyika runs through Uganda, Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi and Tanzania to the south end of the country.

It is one of Africa's most important biodiversity sites. The Rwenzori Mountains cover unrest on the ice fields, active volcanoes, hot springs, bamboo, mountain vegetation, mountain forest, savanna and lowland forests, Semliki. Snow-covered Ruwenzori Mountains form one of the largest and most important catchment areas in Uganda, and is a regular source of White Nile.

The western side abuts the Guinea-Congolian lowland forest. Overall its central location in Africa, the juxtaposition of habitats and the spread of high-rise area by a considerable diversity of species and the large number of outstanding Albertine rift endemic throughout the world, pointed out the area in which the last world population of Mountain Gorilla.

Covering only 1% of the African continent by land Albertine Rift, however, is more than 50 percent. Continental African bird species and nearly 40% of its mammals. Albertine Rift area is more endemic mammals, birds and amphibians than any other place, the African mainland.
