Aging becomes more rapid and visible when we reach our mid-thirties. When we age, the first signs that appear include thinner, loose skin that hang from the face. The skin becomes loose and sagging because of the loss of collagen and elastin fibers as we grow older.

Development of medical aesthetics has improved over the last few years. Just over ten years ago, when people talk about surgical facelift, people used to refer to surgical face lifting procedure. Non-surgical face lifting treatment was still unfamiliar to many people. However, non-surgical facelift treatments have gained popularity. Offered by many medical aesthetic clinics in Singapore, non-surgical face lifting treatment can help restore facial contour and lift sagging skin on the face and neck.

Radium Medical Aesthetics, a leading medical aesthetic clinic based in Singapore, offers PDO Thread Lift to combat sagging skin. Dr Siew Tuck Wah, Medical Director of Radium Medical Aesthetics explains what PDO Thread Lift is all about.

PDO THREAD LIFT: THE FUTURE OF NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT

PDO Thread Lift is a non-surgical skin lifting treatment that involves the insertion of a blunt cannula with a dissolvable thread made of polydioxanone (PDO) into the subcutaneous fat layer under the skin.

The threads provide an immediate lifting effect to compress and reposition loose facial skin. At the same time, the barbs and anchors that are found on PDO threads trigger an inflammatory reaction to stimulate and generate collagen production. High collagen levels are important because they are usually associated with young people with firm skin.

When done correctly, PDO threads stay anchored in the face for about 9 months after the treatment. Over the period the threads stay in the face, they slowly dissolve and get resorbed by the body. However, the skin will still stay lifted in its position. The lifting and plumping effects will continue to be visible for another 12 months, depending on individual.

WHY ARE PDO THREADS SO EFFECTIVE IN LIFTING SAGGING SKIN?

The special dissolvable sutures come in different types that are often used for PDO Thread Lift procedures.

Mono threads are smooth threads without any anchors (barbs and cogs). Many threads are placed perpendicularly in a mesh-like manner. This is done to encourage collagen stimulation so that the skin becomes firmer and tighter.

Screw threads are two mono threads wound around in a needle. Screw threads are great for providing a volumizing effect on sunken areas of the face such as the cheeks.

Cog threads are perhaps the most commonly used PDO threads by doctors. Cog threads are essentially mono threads that have barbs lined on the threads. These barbs anchor to the underside of the skin to provide visible lift. Also, these barbs encourage the formation of collagen. Cog threads are typically used by doctors for lifting around the lower face and to give the V-shape face that most people desire.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SILHOUETTE SOFT THREAD LIFT AND PDO THREAD LIFT?

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift procedure uses threads made of polylactic acid (PLA) monofilament. Just like PDO, the threads dissolve after a few months and they help to stimulate collagen production. According to some studies, PLA stimulates Type 1 collagen synthesis and this skin lifting effect brought about by Silhouette Soft Thread Lift can last for 2 years or more.

On the other hand, PDO Thread Lift is a material used by surgeons for surgical sutures. This material is completely bio-compatible. Barbed threads are increasingly becoming more popular among doctors as they induce more inflammatory response, causing more collagen production. As a result, the skin lifting result is more pronounced.

CAN PDO THREAD LIFT BE COMBINED WITH OTHER SKIN LIFTING TREATMENTS?

PDO Thread Lift procedure can provide visible skin lifting result. However, if combined with other skin lifting treatments such as Silhouette Soft Thread Lift, Ultherapy Skin Lifting, or dermal filler treatment (Liquid Facelift), longer-lasting result can be achieved.

HOW PDO THREAD LIFT CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE NATURAL SKIN LIFTING EFFECT

PDO threads especially the screw and cog types provide excellent support to lift sagging skin. The bio-compatible PDO threads anchor the sagging skin and lift them to their new lifted position.

After the PDO threads are inserted, the rejuvenative process commences. Collagen and elastin fibers are stimulated by the threads to improve the elasticity and firmness of the skin. The PDO threads dissolve 9 months after the treatment and the skin will continue to stay in its lifted position. Wrinkles and fine lines also reduce in appearance and facial contours become more defined.
