Abstract

Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) is a rare lung disease that can occur in two forms, i.e. cellular and fibrotic. This disorder is characterized by the inflammation of the walls of the alveoli (lung’s tiny air sac) resulting in dry cough, difficulty in breathing and fatigue. This article is all about NSIP and herbal remedies offered by Planet Ayurveda to treat this condition.

Introduction

Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia tends to affect middle aged people more often, aging between 40-50 years. Women are mostly affected with this rare lung disorder as compared to men. IN NSIP, the tissue surrounding and separating alveoli from the other gets affected. Alveoli are the tiny air sacs present in lungs where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs between bloodstream and lungs. Inflammation of these tissues surrounding alveoli eventually causes the pleura to get inflamed as well. Pleura is the very important part of the lungs which acts as cushion and reduces any sort of friction between lungs, chest cavity and ribs, preventing injury to the lungs. This inflammation gradually can lead to permanent scarring of the lungs.

NSIP is of two types, i.e. Cellular and fibrotic. Cellular type is less common but its prognosis is better than fibrotic. In this type interstitial cells become inflamed. While fibrotic Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia is more common along with bad prognosis and there occurs scarring and thickening of the tissue of the lung. Cellular form has better diagnosis because the inflammation is reversible unlike scarring. Scarring and inflammation can be present at the same time in the tissue. Scarring is the fibrosis which cannot be reversed and decreases the function of an organ. Due to scarring breathing is not proper which leads to decreased level of blood oxygen.

Signs and Symptoms

The major signs and symptoms which a nonspecific interstitial pneumonia patient suffers are

  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Dry cough
  • With passing time and increasing pathology patient develops shortness of breath after exertion or without it
  • Fatigue
  • Clubbing of nails- It occurs due to low oxygen level in the blood. There occurs enlargement of the tips of the fingers and curving of nails around them

Causes

The exact cause behind NSIP is not known. There has been a connection between Nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and connective tissue diseases like systemic sclerosis and collagen vascular disease. Autoimmunity is the reason suggested by many of the researchers behind it and also there have been seen the involvement of certain genes (role of heredity). There are certain risk factors like use of chemotherapy drugs, inhalation of the dust or chemicals or radiation treatment.

Diagnosis

When a patient visits the doctor with chronic or subacute cough and dyspnea which is unexplained, it can raise the doubt of NSIP. Further medical history will strengthen this doubt and after certain tests NSIP can be confirmed, like

  • Chest X-ray showing patchy bilateral opacities
  • HRCT (High resolution CT) scan
  • Bronchoalveolar lavage
  • Lung biopsy

Treatment for NSIP in Ayurveda

Treatment for NSIP mainly depends on the degree of fibrosis that has already occurred. Conventional treatment for NSIP is oral corticosteroids like prednisone. However not all the patients do respond to this treatment and further immunosuppressant drugs are given to them along with the former.

Due to the long list of side effects of corticosteroids and immune system action suppressing drugs, people usually seem to develop them when taken in the long term. Here Ayurveda can manage the condition naturally and without causing harm to the body, not even in the long term. Ayurveda is an alternative system of medicine which originated in India and used and practiced throughout the world. Ayurveda offers numerous herbs which possess medicinal and therapeutic properties.
